Sci-fi television is currently enjoying a fantastic period. Shows like Severance explore the dark side of work-life balance, while Andor delivers a realistic and intense spy story set within the Star Wars galaxy. Arcane successfully adapted the world of League of Legends into what many consider one of the best animated series ever. Black Mirror reimagines The Twilight Zone for today’s world of smartphones and social media, and Pluribus presented a unique take on the end of the world, focusing on our fundamental need for connection.
With so many new sci-fi shows appearing on TV, some excellent ones haven’t lasted long. Amazon’s futuristic thriller The Peripheral was canceled after only one season, Westworld faded away despite a strong start, and the 12 Monkeys series didn’t get the attention it deserved. Back in 2021, Amazon Prime Video released a seven-episode anthology series that felt like a mix of Black Mirror and the thought experiment Pluribus.
Similar to Black Mirror, Solos is a science fiction series that imagines a future where technology has advanced to unsettling levels, and examines the potentially negative consequences. Like Pluribus, it uses these futuristic settings to explore fundamental aspects of what it means to be human.
Every Episode Of Solos Is Anchored By A Different A-List Star
Each episode of Solos features a well-known actor. The series begins with Anne Hathaway, followed by Anthony Mackie, Helen Mirren, Uzo Aduba, Constance Wu, Nicole Beharie, and concludes with a performance by Morgan Freeman. Each actor tackles a compelling and complex character.
Anne Hathaway stars as a scientist who connects with the future, only to clash with her older self. Anthony Mackie plays a sick businessman facing his mortality who struggles with a robotic version of himself that forces him to confront his shortcomings. Morgan Freeman portrays an Alzheimer’s patient who’s been stealing joyful memories to escape his own painful regrets, and Dan Stevens appears as a guest star playing one of those whose memories have been taken, and is fighting to reclaim them.
Jack Quaid, known for his role as Hughie in The Boys, voices a high-tech smart home in the show. Chris Diamantopoulos, who played Russ Hanneman on Silicon Valley, portrays a technician who can download people’s memories. The series features many recognizable actors and voices, like Quaid’s.
Solos Deserved More Than One Season
When Solos came out in 2021, critics didn’t like it very much. It only received a 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which likely discouraged many people from watching. The show didn’t gain a large following and was quickly forgotten. However, viewers seemed to enjoy it much more, giving it a 71% rating. Critics felt it was too similar to Black Mirror, but audiences don’t mind having two shows exploring dark, futuristic themes – especially since new episodes of Black Mirror can take a long time to appear.
The show Solos was a fantastic companion to Black Mirror, offering similar thought-provoking stories when Black Mirror wasn’t airing. It’s disappointing it didn’t get renewed for another season. The initial seven episodes were just a glimpse of its potential, and explored what it means to be human in compelling ways. Considering Black Mirror‘s creator, Charlie Brooker, has continued making episodes for 15 years, it seems likely Solos creator David Weil had many more stories to tell.
