Daredevil: Born Again Loses More Than Double Of Season 1’s Viewership

The Daredevil: Born Again season 2 viewership has taken a major beating.

The first season of the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again had a complicated production process. It initially started as a gentle reimagining of the old Netflix Daredevil show, but later shifted to directly continue the original storyline. This resulted in a first season that felt like a blend of these two approaches and received a mixed response from viewers. However, the second season has been a critical success, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 90% from critics and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Although season 2 has been well-received, viewership numbers have fallen significantly compared to the first season, according to data from Luminate (reported by ComicBook.com). Total hours watched are down over 54%, and the number of views has decreased to 46% of what season 1 achieved. In its first five weeks, season 1 garnered 8.36 million views, totaling 24 million hours and over 1.44 billion minutes watched. Season 2’s first five weeks saw 4.52 million views, 10.87 million hours watched, and 652 million minutes watched.

The first week of Daredevil: Born Again season 1 drew 1.9 million views and 3.49 million hours of watch time. Season 2 started with 927,000 views and 788,000 hours watched. Viewership numbers have dropped considerably each week since, even after episodes 2 and 3 of season 2 were released together. Here’s a detailed look at the viewing figures:

Total Season Views Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
Week 1 1,904,000 927,000
Week 2 2,728,000 1,260,000
Week 3 1,374,000 962,000
Week 4 1,282,000 750,000
Week 5 1,069,000 616,000
Total 8,357,000 4,515,000

The first season of Daredevil: Born Again was exciting because it reunited Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin after their Netflix series ended in 2018. Although it’s normal for a show’s second season to lose some viewers, the significant drop in ratings for this season was unexpected.

Despite a rocky start and some initial criticism, the first season of Daredevil: Born Again was already a standout show on Disney+ for Marvel fans. Now, most critics and viewers agree that the second season is even stronger, offering a more focused story and a tone that feels closer to the original Netflix series. The popular pairing of Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, who audiences have enjoyed for over ten years, continues to be a major draw.

The recent drop in viewers likely won’t change anything for the already-in-production third season of Daredevil: Born Again or The Punisher: Last Kill, which is set to premiere on May 12th. However, a potential fourth season and other future projects focusing on street-level heroes within the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be at risk.

Krysten Ritter will return as Jessica Jones in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, and photos from the set show that Luke Cage (played by Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) will appear in season 3. Because of these appearances, it now seems less probable that any of these heroes will get their own separate shows formatted like Born Again.

Okay, so I’m really excited for the last two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again to drop! There’s a lot of buzz around what’s going to happen with Dex/Bullseye, Vanessa Fisk, and even Jessica Jones after those crazy mid-season episodes, and I’m hoping that excitement will bring a big jump in viewers. Honestly though, the numbers we’ve seen so far aren’t great, and it makes me wonder if Marvel might have to rethink their plans for the future of the MCU based on how this season performs.

Daredevil: Born Again releases new episodes Tuesdays at 9:00 pm ET on Disney+.
