The upcoming team-up movie in James Gunn’s DC Universe is starting to sound a lot like Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice from the previous DC film series. Batman v Superman was quite divisive when it came out in 2016, with critics and audiences having very different opinions. The film was widely discussed and even made fun of online, and many fans were unhappy with the ending where Superman died.
James Gunn was brought in to reboot the DC Universe due to the previous DCEU’s uneven quality and fan division. He’s started strong with shows like Peacemaker season 2 and Creature Commandos, and the upcoming Superman movie in 2025. Several other DCU films, including Clayface and Supergirl, are also looking promising.
The new DC Universe (DCU) has so far avoided many of the issues that plagued the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The 2025 Superman movie felt brighter and more optimistic than the darker Snyderverse films, and the new movies and shows are staying truer to the comic books, leading to overall success. However, the upcoming Man of Tomorrow film appears to be taking cues from Batman v Superman, which could potentially lead to similar problems that held that earlier film back.
Man Of Tomorrow Is Another Superman Team-Up Film Like Batman v Superman
While Man of Tomorrow and Batman v Superman tell different stories – one focuses on Batman and Superman fighting, the other on Superman and Lex Luthor working together against Brainiac – there are still several common elements between the second Superman films in both the DCEU and DCU.
Both Batman v Superman and Man of Tomorrow are fundamentally team-up movies. In Batman v Superman, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman ultimately joined forces to fight Lex Luthor and Doomsday. Similarly, Man of Tomorrow will feature Superman and Lex Luthor working together to defeat Brainiac. The new film also includes other DC heroes like Hawkgirl and John Stewart, just like Wonder Woman appeared alongside Batman and Superman in Batman v Superman.
There’s been talk that the movie Man of Tomorrow might be where we first see the new Wonder Woman in the DC Universe, but details about the cast are currently just rumors and speculation. Like Batman v Superman before it, Man of Tomorrow will be Superman’s second appearance in the DCU. However, neither of these films continue the story from the original Superman movies. Instead, these team-up stories focus more on the bigger DC Universe as a whole, rather than solely on Superman’s journey.
Films like Batman v Superman focused more on building the groundwork for Justice League and introducing Wonder Woman than on developing Superman’s own story. If the current rumors are accurate, the upcoming Man of Tomorrow film appears to be prioritizing Lex Luthor’s role in the DC Universe and introducing characters such as Wonder Woman, Maxima, and the Green Lanterns. While Superman will likely have some character development, it won’t be a movie primarily focused on his solo adventures.
Even In The DCU, Superman Can’t Get A Solo Sequel
The fact that Man of Tomorrow feels more like a team-up movie than a direct sequel to a Superman film also reveals a key issue with both the DCEU and DCU: neither one has been able to successfully create a proper solo Superman sequel. Even though Man of Steel started the DCEU and Superman (2025) is launching the DCU’s theatrical releases, Superman only receives a single solo film in each universe.
While Superman 2025 centered on Superman, it wasn’t a purely solo adventure. The film prominently featured other DC heroes like Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho, all playing significant parts. It even ended with a glimpse of Supergirl! Essentially, Superman 2025 served as an introduction to a larger team – the Justice League (or what would become known as the Justice League).
As a Superman fan, I’ve always seen his movies a bit differently. His first outing felt like a solid introduction to the character, but what really struck me is how quickly subsequent films shifted focus. It’s almost as if Superman’s just the starting point – the launching pad, if you will – for the entire DC universe. Instead of being about Superman, the next movie seems designed to introduce a whole team of heroes and villains, setting the stage for everything that comes after Man of Tomorrow. He goes from being the central figure to more of a narrative device, and honestly, it’s a bit of a shift.
