This 2011 Dark Fantasy Anime Deserves as Much Attention as Madoka Magica

While Fate/strange Fake has recently gained popularity for its innovative approach and striking visuals, a different Fate series installment released in 2018 also boasted impressive animation and a distinctive style that deserves more recognition.

The series, Fate/Extra Last Encore, was made by the team behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica – Akiyuki Shinbo and Yukihiro Miyamoto – and Fate’s original creator, Kinoko Nasu. While set in the virtual world of SE.RA.PH, the show didn’t rely on typical virtual reality tropes. Instead, the animation studio Shaft crafted something unique and deserving of more attention from fans.

Fate/Extra Last Encore is a Digital Adventure With a Twist

Fate/Extra Last Encore centers around Hakuno, a boy trapped in a virtual reality called SE.RA.PH. After repeating the same school days for years, he’s lost all hope. However, his life takes a turn when he’s unexpectedly entered into a dangerous battle called the Holy Grail War.

Most Fate stories center around a competition between mages who are all trying to obtain the Holy Grail, a magical object that grants wishes. They battle each other by summoning Servants – powerful, legendary figures from the past, brought back to life to fight as their champions.

Hakuno didn’t want to be involved in the Holy Grail War, but somehow ended up summoning a Servant named Saber. While Hakuno is unhappy about it, Saber is determined to fight, even if her master isn’t enthusiastic.

Hakuno’s uncertainty about participating in the Holy Grail War might seem unusual, but it actually makes Fate/Extra Last Encore feel different and interesting. Unlike most heroes, Hakuno doesn’t eagerly accept or reject the call to action. Instead, Saber takes the lead, pushing Hakuno to discover his own purpose.

Saber is a Type Moon Heroine Like No Other

Saber is a fan-favorite character from Fate/Extra Last Encore. She’s a proud and confident leader who confidently pursues her goals, but also genuinely cares for the people around her. She’s easily recognized by her striking red attire and unique sword.

Saber is a fascinating reimagining of a historical figure within the Fate universe. While historically Nero Claudius was a notorious Roman Emperor, in Fate, Nero is portrayed as a woman who dedicated herself to fighting corruption and improving life for the people of her empire. This fight for justice, however, earned her powerful and dangerous enemies.

Nero witnessed everything she had created fall apart and died with a ruined reputation. This version of Nero, aside from being presented as female, aligns with what many historians now believe about the actual Emperor’s reign. It’s compelling to see Nero reflect on her own legacy in Fate/Extra Last Encore, and it’s a clever illustration of how the Fate series enjoys reinterpreting historical figures.

Watching Fate/Extra Last Encore, I was fascinated by the historical details. Nero’s palace in the show, the Domus Aurea, is actually a real theater built by the emperor Nero – it was even rediscovered beneath Rome in 2020! It’s cool to see that level of research and attention to detail, and I noticed similar touches in other shows like Puella Magi Madoka Magica as well.

Shaft Connects Madoka Magica and Fate

The anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica is known for its striking and often dreamlike visuals. The battles against the show’s villains, the witches, are particularly memorable thanks to their constantly changing art styles and unique designs.

Shaft’s vision for the world of SE.RA.PH is visually striking, featuring imaginative animation like cities that twist and turn, dreamlike sequences that reveal a character’s feelings, and flashbacks presented in a variety of art styles. Viewers who enjoyed the unique look of Puella Magi Madoka Magica will likely appreciate the visuals of Fate/Extra Last Encore as well.

Shaft Animation Studio did beautiful work on Fate/Extra Last Encore, but they aren’t the only talented animation studio involved with the Fate series. Another studio with ties to both Fate and Puella Magi Madoka Magica is the one that created Fate/Zero.

Fate Zero Links Madoka Magica and Fate Together

I’m a huge fan of Fate/Zero – it’s easily one of my favorites in the whole Fate series! What’s really cool about it is that it was written by Gen Urobuchi, who also created Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Both shows are amazing at taking familiar story types and completely flipping them on their head, constantly keeping you guessing and throwing in these incredibly tragic twists. They really know how to play with your expectations!

Kinoko Nasu, the creator of Fate, personally chose his friend Gen Urobuchi to write the story of Fate/Zero. This story delves into the backgrounds and motivations of the characters. Nasu’s interest in understanding what drives his characters also played a major role in Fate/Extra Last Encore.

I noticed that Fate/Extra Last Encore, much like Fate/Zero, features characters you might already know from the Fate series, but honestly, you don’t need any prior knowledge to get into it. What’s really cool is that if you do revisit the show after finishing it, you’ll pick up on all sorts of hidden details and secrets. It’s a series that definitely rewards a second viewing – I kept discovering new things each time!

Why Fans Were Upset With Fate/Extra Last Encore

While Fate/Extra Last Encore has its strengths, it’s faced criticism from fans due to its departure from the original Fate/Extra video game. Rather than directly adapting the game’s story, the anime is set a thousand years later, resulting in significant changes to the characters and plot that didn’t meet fan expectations.

The show originally had an unusual release pattern, with the first ten episodes appearing long before the last three. Fortunately, that’s no longer a problem for new viewers. What remains consistent is the core of Fate/Extra Last Encore. The story really needed two seasons to fully unfold, but it only received one.

The fast-paced storytelling in Fate/Extra Last Encore can sometimes be hard to follow, making it easy to miss important details. While the series has great ideas and a captivating story, viewers may need to pay close attention to fully appreciate everything it offers.

If you enjoy animated shows, historical settings, and compelling stories, Fate/Extra Last Encore is worth checking out. Though it’s not perfect, the show offers a lot to appreciate, especially for fans of Puella Magi Madoka Magica who will enjoy its beautiful animation and unique take on history. It’s a fun and engaging watch.
