What guiding principle or core idea drives your work as a director, and what are you aiming to consistently achieve with this particular movie?

The original Lord of the Rings team is back together for this project, which is a great start. The film is deeply rooted in the established stories, world, and Peter Jackson’s vision from both the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, so it will genuinely feel like a true Middle-earth movie. However, this time, we’re also taking a much closer look inside one of Tolkien’s most complicated characters – Gollum – exploring his psychology in a way we haven’t seen before.

It’s a delicate balance, blending something new with the familiar elements of the original trilogy. We’re using filmmaking techniques that fans will recognize, while also telling a fresh, personal story within the beloved world of Middle-earth. It’s exciting because this film will be an introduction to Middle-earth for many viewers, which adds another layer of complexity and makes the whole process really interesting.

Andy Serkis will direct the upcoming Lord of the Rings movie, with Peter Jackson as a producer. They plan to film in New Zealand, staying true to the original trilogy, and production is expected to start in May 2026.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will arrive in theaters on December 17, 2027.
