Netflix’s latest crime series is about to heat up.
The platform has become known for its popular crime series, including the critically acclaimed Ozark, which ran from 2017 to 2022. More recent hits include Black Doves, Bandi, Bodkin, The Woods, and the upcoming 2025 series Black Rabbit, starring Jason Bateman. The platform offers a variety of these shows, from limited-run miniseries to ongoing seasons.
Courtney A. Kemp is a major creative force in crime dramas on television. She’s most famous for being the showrunner of Power, which first aired in 2014 and became incredibly popular. The show’s success led to three spin-off series: Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and Power Book IV: Force.
According to What’s on Netflix, the new series Nemesis from Kemp will be available to stream soon. The first season will premiere on May 14th, the same day as the Japanese drama Soul Mate.
Nemesis is a Los Angeles-based heist series that pits a brilliant thief against an experienced detective. The show stars Eric C. Sun, Manuel Uriza, DeLaRosa Rivera, Sol Romo, Anthony D. Washington, Brielle Barbusca, Leialani Nicol, and Mike O’Malley.
Kemp created the show Nemesis alongside Tani Marole, and is also in charge of running it. This project is particularly exciting because it’s Marole’s first time creating a television series.
The new show, Nemesis, marks a change for Courtney Kemp, as it’s the first series she’s worked on in over ten years that isn’t connected to the Power universe. Before this, she hadn’t been involved in a TV show outside of the Power franchise since Beauty and the Beast, which ran from 2012 to 2013.
With Nemesis, Courtney Kemp has a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate her creative skills beyond the Power universe. While sharing some genre similarities with Power, Nemesis features a significantly different central storyline. This allows Kemp to explore new creative avenues and showcase a broader range of her talents within the crime drama landscape.
Crime dramas often perform well on Netflix, and this new show, Nemesis, has the potential to do the same. However, it lacks a big-name star and isn’t based on a popular book – both of which have helped other successful crime series, like those adapted from Harlan Coben novels, gain traction.
This fresh, new show features a cast you may not know yet, so its success depends on viewers who enjoy shows like Power and other crime dramas. It’s still unclear whether fans will embrace or reject Nemesis when it starts streaming on Netflix next month.
