Netflix has announced the title of its new live-action Scooby-Doo show: Scooby-Doo: Origins, and shared some good news about how production is going.
For over 50 years, Scooby-Doo has been a popular series with many different TV shows and movies. Now, with Scooby-Doo: Origins on Netflix, both new and longtime fans can see how the Mystery Inc. gang first came together.
Netflix announced that filming has begun on Scooby-Doo: Origins in Atlanta, Georgia. The show will explore the early days of the Mystery Inc. gang, showing how they originally met and formed their team with a fresh, contemporary perspective.
This story takes place during Shaggy and Daphne’s last summer at camp. They find themselves caught up in a spooky mystery when a lost Great Dane puppy appears. The friends suspect this dog—who will eventually become Scooby-Doo—is connected to a supernatural murder, launching them into a frightening and complicated investigation.
Velma Dinkley, played by Abby Ryder Fortson, and Freddy Jones, played by Maxwell Jenkins, join Shaggy and Daphne as the four teens work together to solve a mystery. This new case will challenge their bravery and reveal long-hidden secrets. The series promises to be suspenseful and focus on character development, while still capturing the fun, lighthearted feel fans love about Scooby-Doo. Paul Walter Hauser is also part of the cast, though his role hasn’t been revealed yet.
The show is creatively led by writers and showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who previously worked on series like Everything Sucks! and High Fidelity. It’s produced by Midnight Radio, with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman of Berlanti Productions serving as executive producers through their deal with Warner Bros. Television. André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, Adrienne Erickson, and director Toby Haynes – who will direct the first episode – are also executive producers.
As a critic, I’ve noticed Atlanta becoming a real hotspot for Netflix shows, and this series fits right in with productions like Stranger Things and Sweet Magnolias that have already filmed there. It’s clear the city is now a major player in the TV and film industry, and it’s easy to see why so many projects are choosing to base themselves there.
As of today, Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for Scooby-Doo: Origins, but many believe it will come out in 2027.
