The upcoming 2026 film portrays the life of Michael Jackson, but it differs from previous documentaries by subtly altering the depiction of characters. This change is meant to represent a fresh start for both Michael and the entire Jackson family.
The film subtly showed the passage of time and different periods in Michael Jackson’s life through visual changes. These included alterations to his facial features, depicted through surgical enhancements, and the gradual lightening of his skin tone as a result of his vitiligo. The movie begins with his early years in the Jackson 5 and culminates with his iconic 1988 performance at London’s Wembley Stadium during the Bad World Tour.
Liam Crowley from Screen Rant interviewed director Antoine Fuqua and cast members, including Colman Domingo (who played Joe Jackson, Michael’s father and manager), about how the film captured key moments. They discussed details like changes in the actors’ looks and important scenes – such as the fax Joe received when he was fired – which showed Michael taking control of his career.
That shot, created by the talented cinematographer Deon Beebe, visually represents the start of major changes in Joe’s life – like the first tremors of an earthquake. It shows Michael beginning to break free and pursue his artistic vision. The ‘explosion’ in the shot symbolizes the difficult experiences he needed to overcome to become the iconic Michael Jackson we all know. That’s why we see it presented that way – to capture that initial shift and foreshadow what’s to come.
Fuqua also achieved this effect by filming on traditional film stock, which lent the movie a classic look and made the scenes set in the 1960s and 80s feel more raw and authentic.
Antoine Fuqua explained that their main aim was to immerse the audience in the story’s setting. They wanted a realistic feel, avoiding anything overly polished, while still maintaining visual quality. They filmed using actual film to capture the look of both the 1980s and 1960s, and carefully adjusted the lighting, color, and contrast to subtly reflect each era, making the experience feel authentic.
Domingo noticed it wasn’t grand gestures, but small details that revealed just how much influence Joseph Jackson had – not only over Michael and his family, but over almost everyone he worked with.
Colman Domingo realized, while sitting in the office of the person he was portraying, how powerfully that person would command the space. He imagined someone who preferred to remain still, controlling the interaction by letting others come to him. Domingo decided to embody this stillness, mostly remaining seated and listening, using minimal movement – just a swivel of the chair. He felt this conveyed a sense of authority, like a king on his throne, comfortable and in control without needing to rise.
As an actor, getting into Joe was a really interesting challenge. Once I figured out how he moved, the biggest hurdle was nailing his voice. And it wasn’t just a voice – I had to show how it changed over twenty years as this strong, family-centered character evolved. It was all about finding that vocal journey and making it believable across the decades.
I always try to really understand a character’s unique way of speaking and their tone. When studying Joe, I wanted to capture his essence without simply imitating him. I looked for a certain brightness in his voice, and also how it changed with age – that’s crucial. It’s also important to consider how he physically moved and occupied space.
Everything Else The Cast Said About Getting The Jackson Family Right For Michael
ScreenRant asked Colman Domingo and Nia Long about portraying Michael Jackson’s parents. They noted that Colman Domingo seemed particularly drawn to the role of Joe Jackson. While the film often presents Joe as an antagonist through Michael’s perspective, the actor points out that Joe believed everything he did was for his family. The interviewer was curious how Domingo connected with Joe Jackson and saw him as the hero of his own life, and the Jackson family’s story.
Colman Domingo described the person as someone who loved to talk, which really revealed his personality and humor. He seemed very conscious of how others saw him and enjoyed playing up that image. It was almost like a game – if people thought he was tough, he’d emphasize that side even more. He definitely liked to have fun with how he was perceived, and I think Jafaar would agree he thrived on that dynamic.
Jafaar Jackson: Very right, yeah.
I recall seeing footage of the family’s ‘Joe Jackson Day’ celebrations at their home – gatherings for his birthday or other special occasions. You could see the joy and affection, and how he interacted with his family. It showed that, like any family, things were complex and nuanced. Everyone had their individual experiences, but despite everything, they prioritized staying connected and supporting each other.
ScreenRant: Nia, did you get the chance to connect with Katherine at all, the real-life Katherine?
I haven’t met her personally, but I often think about her and always wish her well. I truly see her as a hero and deeply admire everything she did. She carried a huge responsibility, protecting her family with such grace and love. It’s amazing, and it speaks to the incredible dedication of a mother. I believe that strong bond created a secure environment where Michael could grow into the man he became.
