Hearthstone Battlegrounds launched in 2019 and remains popular today. It began as an eight-player auto-battler where everyone competed individually, and in 2023, a 2v2 team mode called “Duos” was added. The game is constantly evolving with updates that introduce new heroes, factions, and gameplay mechanics, often changing the way the game is played.
Although Hearthstone receives regular updates and still surprises players, the Battlegrounds team consistently impresses me. This is particularly notable because Battlegrounds isn’t the core part of Hearthstone. While other game modes have been removed (like Mercenaries), Battlegrounds continues to thrive and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon.
We spoke with Mitchell Loewen, the Lead Game Designer for Hearthstone Battlegrounds, to understand what makes the game work so well and the challenges of keeping it fresh after so many years. It’s clear the game is being well-managed and is in capable hands.
Why Battlegrounds Is Still Going Strong
“It’s About Variety”
If you’re new to Battlegrounds, you can jump right in with a Hearthstone account. Each match starts with choosing a hero, which influences how you play, and a selection of different creature types (like demons, beasts, or Murlocs) will be available. The game plays out automatically, but your choices about which creatures to pick and where to position them are key to winning.
Loewen believes the main appeal of Battlegrounds lies in its incredible variety. The combination of different minions, heroes, and game systems creates a unique experience every time you play. Plus, regularly updating the available content – both adding new things and changing how older content works – keeps the game fresh and exciting. Each system within Battlegrounds also has its own distinct feel, offering players new and interesting ways to strategize.
He explains that last season featured a “time warp tavern” which allowed players to collect variations of their minions – different versions based on their origins. This encouraged unique board builds, as the minions available changed with each game. This season, however, focuses on “trinkets” – enhancements that add new abilities without significantly altering the overall look of your board. Think of them like extra powers that complement your existing strategy, rather than completely changing it.
According to Loewen, the team is always considering new ideas and gameplay options while also learning from what has been successful in the past. This blend of established strengths and innovative concepts is what makes Battlegrounds so compelling, as they continually strive to keep the game exciting.
However, simply having good ideas isn’t enough to create a successful game. According to Loewen, achieving balance is a continuous process. He explained that a card which seems reasonable on its own can become incredibly powerful with small adjustments to other cards or game elements. It’s a constant effort—perfect balance is impossible, but there are always ways to improve and refine things.
Loewen explains that they aim to gather feedback from many different players to understand a wide range of experiences. Because players have varying levels of skill, play frequency, and overall styles, it’s difficult to create a single perfect experience for everyone. Their approach is to find the best balance for the majority of players, sometimes by focusing on specific groups and other times by making changes that benefit the entire player base.
In a game like Battlegrounds, even small adjustments can have a big impact. It’s often surprising to see how players react to changes – sometimes they think a minor adjustment, like moving a card from one tier to another, won’t make a difference at all. But often, that one-tier change can be crucial. It affects how quickly you can get the card and how many copies are available, and getting a card just a turn or two earlier can completely change the effectiveness of certain strategies. It’s easy to underestimate how significant these seemingly small changes can be.
Battlegrounds Is The Best Part of Hearthstone
And The Easiest Way To Jump In
Our team constantly looks at player feedback, even for small improvements. I was surprised to learn how much effort goes into the game’s animations. We’ve been addressing concerns about animations feeling too long, especially during combat. We speed up animations during extended fights to minimize disruption to the shop phase. We’re also refining individual animations for cards and items. For instance, some cards now only play an animation the first time their effect triggers, skipping it on subsequent uses since players already understand what’s happening.
Loewen explained that they’ve improved performance by applying effects to cards in batches instead of one by one. They’ve also streamlined effects that happen repeatedly, presenting them as a single visual event instead of many. These changes, along with other optimizations and technical improvements, are contributing to better performance overall. It’s not one big fix, but rather a collection of many small improvements.
Maintaining a game for seven years and keeping it interesting is definitely challenging. Loewen explains that with a game of this size and lifespan, changes made in one area can unexpectedly cause problems elsewhere, requiring fixes. That’s just the nature of working on a large game with many different modes.
Loewen and his team have many plans for the future, focusing on new content and gameplay features. He’s particularly excited about a new keyword coming in an upcoming card set and wants to explore how it could be used to create a unique experience within Battlegrounds. While he can’t promise it will happen, he believes this keyword has a lot of potential for the game mode.
Even though those new ideas are still in development, Hearthstone Battlegrounds remains incredibly popular. While I’d love to see it as a separate game someday, it’s still running smoothly as part of the main Hearthstone game.
