Magic: The Gathering is recognized as the very first trading card game, and it’s evolved significantly since it launched in the mid-1990s. Wizards of the Coast has now printed over 15,000 different cards, and some are incredibly rare, valuable, or unique, fetching high prices. Demand for these cards will always remain strong.
While certain cards like the Power Nine and original Alpha dual lands are incredibly valuable, they’re exceptions. If we exclude cards on the Reserved List, what are the ten most expensive and sought-after Magic cards?
Scalding Tarn (Zendikar Expeditions Series)
Beginning in 2015, Wizards of the Coast introduced extremely rare cards as part of the Masterpiece series. These special cards are found infrequently – only one appears in every 144 booster packs, starting with the Zendikar Expeditions set. Scalding Tarn is a particularly valuable ‘fetch land,’ and currently costs around $194.74. It’s a highly sought-after card for any control-based deck in the Modern or Legacy formats.
Polluted Delta (Zendikar Expedition Series)
Polluted Delta is a highly sought-after card, currently valued at around $198. As a “fetch land” – a type of land card that can search your library for other lands – it’s often paired with Scalding Tarn, especially in popular decks like Grixis Delver in the Modern format. It’s a key component in many competitive strategies.
Force Of Will (Amonkhet Invocations Series)
The set introduced an Egyptian-themed world to the game and included the ‘Invocations’ series of cards. While not focused on a single concept, this series featured incredibly strong spells like Blood Moon and Force of Will, which are highly sought after in the Legacy format. A special, deluxe version of the Invocation featuring the God Kefnet is currently selling for $249.95 on TCG Player.
Sword of Feast and Famine (Kaladesh Inventions Series)
The Kaladesh set featured a series of powerful artifacts called Masterpieces, and the popular card Sword of Feast and Famine was included. This impressive Equipment card has been updated with a new look, making it quite valuable – it currently costs around $284.95 on TCG Player.
Misty Rainforest (Zendikar Expeditions Series)
Misty Rainforest is a highly sought-after card from the original Zendikar expeditions. It’s part of the same group as Scalding Tarn – the enemy-colored fetchlands released in the 2009 Zendikar set (Polluted Delta is also from that set). Currently, Misty Rainforest costs around $324.99.
Mana Drain (Legends)
Mana Drain is a remarkably powerful counterspell, especially considering it comes from the older, less-known Legends set. While the original Counterspell was already effective, Mana Drain surpassed it in power. This, combined with how rare it is, explains its high price of $362.22.
Force Of Will (Judge Promos)
Force of Will is a powerful counterspell known for its high price, despite being reprinted in several sets, including Eternal Masters and other expert-level draft sets. This particular version is a rare judge foil promo from 2014, and currently sells for around $390.
Mana Vault (Kaladesh Inventions Series)
The Kaladesh set is back, and the card Mana Vault remains a highly prized item. It’s an older card from a time when Wizards of the Coast printed some incredibly strong cards alongside many weaker, less-known ones. Mana Vault allows players to generate a lot of mana quickly, and it’s often worth accepting a little damage to do so. Currently, a Mana Vault in this condition sells for $399.98.
Sol Ring (Kaladesh Inventions Series)
A new version of the popular card Sol Ring has been released, and it’s already making waves among Magic: The Gathering Commander players. Sol Ring is a powerful “mana rock” – a card that helps generate magical energy – and is known for its low cost and strong effect. Because it’s so valuable and in high demand, especially with this updated design, it’s currently selling for around $462.61 on TCGplayer.
Mana Crypt (Kaladesh Inventions Series)
Mana Crypt is one of the most sought-after Magic: The Gathering cards that isn’t on the Reserved List. Like Mana Vault and Sol Ring, it’s powerful because it quickly generates a lot of mana, allowing for strong plays early in the game. Plus, it costs no mana to cast, and while it does deal three damage if a coin flip goes poorly, that downside isn’t usually a major concern.
If a player can quickly win the game with plenty of resources to spare, a small amount of damage like that from Lightning Bolt hardly matters. This surprisingly strong card, now appearing as a special Kaladesh Invention, is currently valued at $464.03 – truly a remarkable creation.
