A star from Stranger Things has joined the cast of the upcoming John Rambo prequel film. Production on the First Blood origin story began in January and is being directed by Jalmari Helander, known for his work on Sisu and Sisu: Road to Revenge. Helander excels at creating films with strong, quiet characters, making him a great fit for the Rambo franchise. Although principal photography wrapped in March, the filmmakers are still adding new actors to the project.
For the first time in the series, Roberto Centineo will be the lead actor, taking over from Sylvester Stallone. Joining him are Yao (from Sinners), Jason Tobin (Warrior), Jefferson White (Yellowstone), Quincy Isaiah (Winning Time), and Tayme Thapthimthong (The White Lotus). According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Harbour, known for Stranger Things, has now joined the cast and will play a significant, recurring character in Rambo’s story – taking on the role of Major Trautman, previously played by the star of DTF St. Louis.
In the original First Blood film, Richard Crenna portrayed Major Trautman, Rambo’s former commander and the one person who truly understood his struggles. Crenna played Trautman in the first three Rambo movies before his death in 2003. Now, David Harbour will take on the role of Major Trautman, mentoring and training Rambo—played by Percy Centineo—during his initial years.

The upcoming film John Rambo will explore the character’s life before the events of the original First Blood. It’s expected to delve into his experiences during the Vietnam War and show how his PTSD developed, triggered by harassment that led to conflict with law enforcement. With Trautman confirmed to appear, the movie will likely reveal the origins of the strong bond between these two characters, showing how their relationship grew through training and combat – a connection that becomes crucial in later films.
It’s understandable that some action movie fans were hesitant about Miles Teller taking over the role of Rambo – it’s hard for any actor to follow a legend like Stallone. However, Teller has shown he’s capable of more than just romantic comedies, and the trailer for his upcoming Street Fighter movie demonstrates his commitment to physical transformation for a role. He’s already making a strong impression and earning respect for the part. Adding to that, Stallone himself is involved as an executive producer, ensuring the character remains true to its roots alongside directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
When filming began, director Helander shared that the original First Blood film deeply impacted him and inspired his career. That same feeling resonates in his new film, Sisu, which will explore the origins of John Rambo and reveal how he became the iconic, troubled soldier fans know. Helander assures audiences this prequel will be a gritty, authentic survival story focusing on resilience, determination, and the loss of innocence. More details about the film, including post-production updates and potential additions, will be released soon, along with a confirmed release date.
