7 Years Later, Game Of Thrones Releases New Footage From Divisive Final Season

New footage has been revealed from Game of Thrones season 8.

Despite years of praise and massive popularity, the final season of the fantasy series sparked a huge backlash, even prompting a petition with over 1.8 million signatures demanding a remake. While spin-offs like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have helped repair the show’s reputation, many fans still strongly criticize season 8, even seven years after it aired.

To mark 15 years since the premiere of Game of Thrones in 2011, HBO has released previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage. The video shows Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Gwendoline Christie, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, Maisie Williams, and Kit Harington sharing heartfelt goodbyes on the set of the final season. You can watch the footage, set to composer Ramin Djawadi’s famous music, below.

Despite some cast members voicing concerns about how the show ended, everyone featured in the new behind-the-scenes footage about season 8 speaks fondly of their time on Game of Thrones. These actors, all of whom were with the series from the beginning except for Christie who joined in season 2, describe the experience as profoundly impactful both personally and professionally.

The cast and crew of Game of Thrones became like a family during their time working together, and the show launched many of them to international stardom. This success has led to a variety of new roles, including Kit Harington’s work on HBO’s Industry and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Emilia Clarke starring in Peacock’s Ponies and also joining Marvel, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau appearing in Apple TV+’s The Last Thing He Told Me, and opportunities for the cast in projects like Turner’s upcoming Tomb Raider show.

Even though Game of Thrones was a significant and impactful show for many, the actors don’t necessarily want to revisit that world or even the fantasy genre. Kit Harington has stated he has no desire to play Jon Snow again, and Emilia Clarke has suggested she’s finished with fantasy, saying fans shouldn’t expect to see her with a dragon – or even near one – in the future.

Kit Harington expressed his frustration with the petition asking for a remake of Game of Thrones‘ final season, especially considering all the effort put into it. Recent footage shows just how much work went into season 8, and Harington pointed out the dedication of everyone involved – including the grueling 55-night shoot for a single battle sequence – despite fan disappointment with the writing and story choices.

The next season of House of the Dragon will be available in June. Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is planned for 2027, and a movie about Aegon’s Conquest is currently being developed. Previously, a spin-off series centered around Jon Snow, with Kit Harington expected to return as the character, was considered but ultimately canceled.

So, I keep hearing whispers about more shows set in the Game of Thrones universe – potential spinoffs or even sequels. But honestly, nothing’s really confirmed yet. And George R.R. Martin? He’s still plugging away at the books that started it all. We’re all eagerly awaiting The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, the final two volumes, but it’s a slow process, you know?
