10 Underrated Sci-Fi Shows That Deserve More Recognition

Science fiction is often judged by a few well-known shows, which means many excellent series get overlooked. Some shows succeed by fitting into familiar TV patterns or offering a lot of entertainment for their budget, while others simply connect with viewers at the perfect moment. A sci-fi show’s popularity isn’t always a measure of its quality, though the shows that generate the most excitement are usually well-made.

Sometimes, shows that weren’t immediately popular deserve another chance. Science fiction, in particular, has evolved a lot over the last few decades, spreading across traditional networks, cable, and streaming services. This has encouraged more creative risk-taking. While some innovative shows are praised right away, others only gain recognition after people revisit them later. It’s a reminder that a show’s quality isn’t always clear at first.

10. Continuum

The Canadian science fiction series Continuum, which also aired on Syfy in the US, centers around Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols). She’s a police officer from the future who unexpectedly travels back in time to the present day. Over four seasons, the show cleverly examines time travel as Kiera finds herself with a group of rebels known as Liber8, having been transported 65 years into the past while trying to avoid a grim destiny.

Instead of simply using time travel as a convenient story element, the show Continuum cleverly subverted the trope. It didn’t focus on a chaotic future, but instead examined the consequences of its time travel within the present day. This approach created tension through the relationships between characters, rather than relying on complex plot twists.

9. The Expanse

Originally airing on Syfy before moving to Prime Video, The Expanse premiered in 2015 and is based on the novel series by James S. A. Corey. The show envisions a future where humans have colonized the Solar System and follows characters like UN Deputy Undersecretary Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo) and James Holden (Steven Strait), along with the crew of the Rocinante, as they navigate a complex and realistic political world.

Even though The Expanse moved from traditional television to a streaming service during its run, it remains a compelling show because of its detailed world and complex narratives, which allow it to explore very human experiences. The show’s structure, focusing on different groups, keeps the emphasis on character-driven stories rather than just flashy effects.

8. Dark

Dark is a German science fiction series on Netflix that spans three seasons. It follows the lives of several families who become entangled in a complex time travel mystery without realizing it. The show boasts a talented cast, including Louis Hofmann and Lisa Vicari, who help make sense of its intricate plot and guide the story forward.

Despite its intricate and sprawling plot, Dark successfully explores deeply human emotions and ideas. The show cleverly connects small details across seasons, offering a rewarding experience for attentive viewers. However, even if you miss some of those connections, Dark remains a compelling and satisfying story that doesn’t sacrifice depth for simplicity.

7. 12 Monkeys

The series 12 Monkeys follows James Cole (Aaron Stanford) as he journeys through time on a mission to prevent a devastating plague. He seeks help from Dr. Cassandra “Cassie” Railly (Amanda Schull), a virologist from 2015 who is understandably skeptical of a visitor from the future.

Throughout its four seasons, the show builds a complex and layered story centered around Cole and Cassie as they unravel a dangerous conspiracy. Though it reaches a good conclusion, the show truly shines because it consistently delivers on its unique and imaginative premise, staying true to its core concept.

6. Counterpart

Starz’s Counterpart, starring J.K. Simmons across its two seasons, was a complex show that deserved a larger audience. The series revolves around espionage and features Simmons playing multiple versions of the same character, each from a different parallel world. Simmons delivers a remarkably detailed and subtle performance as Howard Silk, giving viewers a unique perspective with each portrayal.

What makes Counterpart stand out isn’t its cool concept of parallel worlds, but the subtle way J.K. Simmons plays his dual role as Howard. This restraint allows the show to focus on the characters’ inner lives, which are far more compelling than flashy special effects. The series had a rich story and deserved to be explored further, and Simmons’ captivating performance deserved a longer run.

5. Person Of Interest

Person of Interest ran for five seasons on CBS and centers around John Reese (Jim Caviezel). He uses a highly advanced device, called The Machine, created by the brilliant Harold Finch (Michael Emerson), to prevent crimes before they happen. Despite its somewhat fantastical concept, the show is grounded by Reese and his team as they work to stop these predicted events.

The show didn’t shy away from tackling real-life issues, weaving stories that resonated with viewers and often offered a hopeful outlook. By blending high-stakes drama with science fiction, Person of Interest felt both exciting and relatable, making its complex themes accessible to a wide audience.

4. The OA

The Netflix series The OA tells the story of Prairie Johnson (Brit Marling), a woman who goes missing for years and returns with her sight restored. Over two seasons, the show unravels the mystery of what happened to her during those lost years and how she regained her vision, as Prairie now calls herself ‘The OA’.

Although The OA could have benefited from a more developed plot, it presented a captivating mystery. The show was refreshingly original and daring in its storytelling, and it consistently maintained its unique vision, making bold creative choices from beginning to end.

3. Sense8

The Netflix series Sense8 quickly gained popularity after its 2015 debut. The show centers around a diverse group of people who unexpectedly become connected mentally and work together to understand what this connection means. Viewers especially appreciated the show’s inclusive cast and its focus on understanding and compassion.

As the show progressed, funding became a challenge, and it wasn’t always clear if Sense8 could continue. Despite this, it managed to run for two seasons before being cancelled. Though known for its clever writing and unique concept, Sense8 was able to conclude its story with a final film, and fans have consistently celebrated its originality.

2. Travelers

The Netflix series Travelers features a team of future agents who send their minds back in time, inhabiting people in the present day to prevent a disastrous future. Starring Eric McCormack, the show cleverly mixes the format of a crime procedural with sci-fi drama, creating a compelling blend of imaginative concepts and realistic stories.

Travelers succeeds as a compelling drama because it focuses on the personal stories of its characters, even with its science fiction premise. It also stays true to its core concept by consistently applying rules to the time travel aspects. The show flows seamlessly from one storyline to the next and is definitely worth watching.

1. Orphan Black

Let me tell you, Orphan Black is a phenomenal show. Over five seasons, Tatiana Maslany delivers what I consider a masterclass in acting, playing not just one character, but a whole slew of them! She starts as Sarah Manning, but quickly we realize she’s one of many clones, and the series follows them as they unravel the mystery of where they came from. What’s truly remarkable is how seamlessly Maslany shifts between each distinct personality – it’s not just different makeup, she becomes them, especially as their lives are turned upside down by a much larger, dangerous conspiracy.

As a critic, I have to say Orphan Black is a genuinely thrilling sci-fi series, but what really makes it special is Tatiana Maslany. Seriously, watching her play so many distinct characters is a masterclass in acting – it’s a gift we don’t often see, and it’s incredible when you consider the sheer effort that went into bringing this complex, surprisingly refreshing story to life.
