Guy Ritchie essentially told the story of The Gentlemen twice – once in his 2020 film and again in the new series. The movie focuses on a man creating a marijuana business using wealthy landowners’ estates, while the series flips the script, showing events from the perspective of those landowners. This approach makes the series one of Ritchie’s strongest works, showcasing his classic filmmaking style.
Guy Ritchie’s best work blends tough, violent action with a surprising amount of humor, making even his darkest stories funny. For example, The Gentlemen features over-the-top scenes like a bloody machete attack and someone being made to act like a chicken. The show’s popularity proves there’s plenty more exciting material for Guy Ritchie to explore.
Similar to The Gentlemen, Hustle was an enjoyable British crime show known for its humor and surprising plot twists. Despite being canceled after eight seasons due to some errors, the show’s concept would likely still be successful now. Given the success of The Gentlemen, Guy Ritchie would be a great director for a potential Hustle reboot.
Like The Gentlemen, Hustle Would Stand Out In A World Of Dark Crime Dramas
A lot of popular crime shows these days feel very similar. Series like MobLand, This City is Ours, and Peaky Blinders all create a dark and intense mood, which makes for compelling television, but can also start to feel repetitive. The Gentlemen was different because it included humor, showing that there’s a place for crime shows that aren’t always so serious.
While Hustle sometimes dealt with serious consequences, like the violent finale and the lasting injuries suffered by some characters, it was mostly a fun and clever show with surprising twists in each episode. It’s rare to see this kind of lighthearted, twist-driven formula in recent shows, especially compared to darker series like Breaking Bad.
Many fans consider episodes showcasing Ritchie’s comedic talent to be the highlights of Hustle. A prime example is “The Henderson Challenge,” where two characters are hilariously stranded naked in London’s Trafalgar Square and challenged to earn the most money in six hours using only their intelligence. The episode’s outlandish premise, clever dialogue, and quick-thinking cons feel surprisingly fresh even today.
Hustle Would Need An Update Before Being Rebooted
The TV show Hustle, like some older series, feels a bit dated now. Stacie, played by Jaime Murray (known from Dexter), is the team’s financial expert and a brilliant mathematician. Although she’s the only woman on the team, her role in the cons often relies on her being a distraction or bait, which doesn’t fully utilize her skills.
Stacie has a compelling personal history, and it’s satisfying to see her get even with her ex. This could have made a great standalone story, but the plot also introduces a romantic angle for her. If the show Hustle were updated, it could keep the same team feel while avoiding the unnecessary sexualization of its only recurring female character.
If Done Right, Hustle Could Last Forever
I’m a huge fan of the original Hustle – it’s a British crime show that seriously deserves more attention! Okay, some of the tech in a few episodes is a little dated now, so if they ever rebooted it, they’d definitely need to update that. But honestly, the core of the show – the con artistry – is timeless. People have been pulling off scams for ages, they just adapt to the times. That means there’s a ton of great story material still available for a Hustle reboot, and I’d be first in line to watch!
I really believe Hustle has the potential to be one of those TV shows that just keeps going and going! It was tough when the original team changed, because their chemistry was amazing, but Guy Ritchie’s shown us that you can keep the spirit of the show alive even with a new cast, and it can still be brilliant.
| Comparing Hustle to The Gentlemen | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Title | Year | Seasons aired | Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Rating | Rotten Tomatoes Audience Rating |
| Hustle | 2004 | 8 | – | 90% |
| The Gentlemen | 2024 | 1 | 75% | 84% |
A Guy Ritchie take on Hustle would likely be significantly more action-packed than the original, and that could be a good thing – as long as it still maintains the show’s comedic elements. It would be interesting to see his unique style applied to episodes like “The Henderson Challenge,” and Hustle would be a great source of inspiration if he’s looking for a new project.
