I watched as Taejoong, even after years of a difficult prison sentence filled with hardship, found a lifeline in Noh Yongsik. Yongsik helped him see this incredibly tough time not as a breaking point, but as a chance to become stronger, both physically and mentally. Just as Taejoong started to accept he might never clear his name, a new prisoner arrived with a story that strangely mirrored his own. Honestly, the unexpected turns in the plot were so captivating that this K-drama, The Manipulated, quickly became a perfect weekend watch. It actually surpassed the movie it was based on, Fabricated City – the same actor, Ji, was in both, and I thought he really shone here.
I’m really loving Ji’s performance here – you can tell he’s fantastic in action roles, and he brings that energy even after playing more gentle characters like in Welcome to Samdal-ri. This is where Taejoong’s determination to escape really kicks into high gear, and honestly, it’s where things finally get incredibly exciting!
The Manipulated Pits the Wrath of the Wretched Against a Maniacal Mastermind
The series The Manipulated quickly shifts from a heartbreaking story of a man unfairly victimized to a thrilling 12-episode revenge saga. While Taejoong’s story is tragic, he’s just one of many innocent people targeted by the ruthless An Yohan. An Yohan, a powerful and sadistic figure, cruelly transforms images of his victims into disturbing works of art. He operates for anyone with wealth or power – from business tycoons to politicians – helping them cover up crimes and showing a complete disregard for human life. To him, everyone is either a commodity to be bought and sold, or a pawn in deadly games.
Even though his opponent has overwhelming advantages, Taejoong steadily breaks through their defenses. A standout moment in episode 6 demonstrates his surprising resilience and intelligence – it might even catch viewers off guard! This is particularly rewarding considering how much hardship Taejoong has overcome. The story shares some similarities with the classic Korean action film Oldboy, but Taejoong’s path is different from the tragic hero of that movie. Unlike Oldboy‘s protagonist, Taejoong is a genuinely sympathetic character, making him someone you naturally want to support.
Taejoong suffered terribly while in prison, enduring years of abuse and torment. Watching him dismantle the powerful people who wronged him – from hitmen to those who pulled the strings – is incredibly satisfying, and often features intense, violent scenes. However, The Manipulated offers more than just action; it’s a story that truly stands out.
Action-Thriller K-Dramas Should Look Up to The Manipulated as a Shining Example

Lately, fans have had a lot of exciting action and thriller K-dramas to enjoy. With the upcoming return of Bloodhounds in April 2026, known for its strong friendship that offsets the show’s darker themes and villains, there’s plenty to look forward to. While dramas like 2021’s My Name often focused on serious revenge plots with occasional lighter scenes, The Manipulated strikes a particularly good balance between darkness and moments of relief.
K-dramas often create a strong emotional connection between viewers and the actors, especially when paired with dramatic storylines. The Manipulated delivers on this with a high-stakes plot centered around a character seeking revenge against a powerful and corrupt organization that has infiltrated both the upper class and the legal system. However, the series also focuses on keeping the main character, Taejoong, relatable, and Kim Jong-soo delivers a remarkable performance as Yongsik, a fellow inmate who acts as his mentor. This adds to the tension and makes viewers deeply invested in whether the heroes will survive.
The show’s success wasn’t just due to its likable characters. Jo Yoon-su delivers a compelling performance as Eunbi, Yongsik’s daughter, who has a believable and distant relationship with her father because of his imprisonment. While Doh Kyung-soo is excellent as the villain, Kim Joong-hee deserves recognition for his portrayal of lawyer Kim Sangrak, featuring unsettling and effective facial expressions that immediately grab your attention.
Beyond the compelling story, the show’s technical elements are also impressive. Filming at the former Gwangju Prison perfectly captured Taejoong’s feelings of hopelessness and despair. The use of the song “You Don’t Let Me Down” by Lefty Violet, starting with the end credits of the first episode, immediately sets a powerful mood. The director also skillfully used tilted camera angles, which became more pronounced as the series escalated into intense violence. The Manipulated is a standout K-drama available on Hulu, and even if you’re new to K-dramas, it easily ranks among the best in the genre.
