‘God of War’ Star’s 2-Part Crime Thriller ‘Outsiders’ Now Free to Stream

Ryan Hurst, who will soon be starring as Kratos in Prime Video’s God of War series, previously played another memorable hero. Before landing the iconic video game role, he starred as Opie in the two-part crime thriller Sons of Anarchy, which is currently available to watch for free online.

Hurst previously played a character remarkably similar to a tough, complicated biker – much like those seen in Kurt Sutter’s acclaimed crime drama. He took on this role in a little-known 2016 TV show set in the Kentucky Appalachian Mountains. The series centers on the Farrell family, who have lived independently off the land for generations. When a large coal company tries to take their property, the Farrells are forced into a violent struggle to defend their home, their traditions, and their family history.

The crime thriller series, called Outsiders, first aired on WGN America ten years ago. It ran for two seasons with a total of 26 episodes and featured a cast including David Morse, Joe Anderson, Gillian Alexy, and Kyle Gallner.

‘Outsiders’ Is a Complex David vs. Goliath Crime Thriller

At its heart, Outsiders is a story about family and being loyal to one another. The conflicts within the Farrell family feel real and relatable, even if your life is very different. When the show first came out in 2016, popular shows like Game of Thrones, Westworld, and Better Call Saul were dominating television, but Outsiders stood out because of its unique setting in the Appalachian Mountains.

Lil Foster Farrell, played by Hurst, is arguably the most grounded character in the story. Unlike the others who are quick to resort to violence, he always tries to find a peaceful solution. While his dedication to protecting his family and town often clashes with Big Foster (Morse)’s methods, Lil Foster is still a flawed individual.

What really makes Outsiders compelling is its characters. They’re flawed and complicated, simply trying to make it through life. The arrival of Blackburg Coal, determined to take the Farrell family’s land and resources, sets up a classic underdog story. Despite their own problems, you find yourself hoping the Farrells will succeed.

When Will ‘God of War’ Premiere on Prime Video?

Filming for the God of War series on Prime Video is currently underway. Production began in Vancouver in February and is projected to continue into 2027.

The series won’t be coming out for a while. After filming, there’s still a lot of work to be done – adding special effects and everything else fans expect from a God of War adaptation. While there’s no official release date yet, it’s likely the show will premiere around 2028.
