Rick and Morty are back for more chaos.
With over 10 billion views worldwide, Rick and Morty became a hugely popular animated show for adults thanks to its blend of science fiction, dark comedy, and surprisingly heartfelt stories. Even with some changes in direction and occasional controversy, the show has stayed successful, and fans are always excited to see what new adventures Rick and Morty get up to.
The trailer for season 9 of Rick and Morty is finally here, promising the usual chaos and the return of Space Beth! The new season will premiere on May 24th on Adult Swim and HBO Max.
I was absolutely blown away by Season 8 of Rick and Morty! Seeing Summer and Morty jump forward 17 years as a consequence of borrowing Rick’s charger was a wild twist. And it was so great to see Space Beth back, especially as the season delved into the complicated but fascinating relationship between her and Rick, capped off with a really exciting space heist. It’s no surprise critics loved it – it earned a phenomenal 93% on Rotten Tomatoes! Many agreed it was just brilliantly smart, funny, and totally unpredictable, which is exactly what I love about the show.
The animated series Rick and Morty faced significant controversy when co-creator and voice actor Justin Roiland was fired following accusations of abuse and related criminal charges. These charges, which include domestic violence and false imprisonment against a former partner, led to major changes in the show’s production and the actors who provide the voices.
In 2023, Justin Roiland faced allegations of inappropriate behavior towards young fans, stemming from his increased popularity. As a result, Adult Swim, Hulu, and 20th Television Animation ended their working relationship with him. From season 7 onwards, Ian Cardoni took over the role of Rick’s voice actor, and Harry Belden became the new voice of Morty.
Season nine of Rick and Morty is promising to be its most expansive and creative season yet, and the creators are making a point of not using artificial intelligence in its production. The official description calls it a season full of excellent episodes – “certified bangers” – and emphasizes that it will be made with genuine artistry, not AI-generated content. Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen also shared details about the upcoming season.
It’s my job to praise this show, and honestly, it deserves it. Each season is better than the last, and it’s amazing to watch. The creators are consistently delivering incredibly creative and well-written episodes, packed with talent and originality. From the very beginning, you’ll be hooked by the show’s wild ideas and fantastic characters.
Rick and Morty season 9 will be available to stream on May 24 on Adult Swim.
