NCIS Killing Torres In The Season 23 Finale Would Be CBS’s Worst Timing Ever

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for NCIS season 23, episode 20, “Sons and Daughters.” If Nick Torres were to die in the season finale, it would be especially heartbreaking given the impact of Wilmer Valderrama’s character. The 2025-2026 television season was significant for many shows, but particularly so for CBS’s long-running series, NCIS. Season 23 included several key events, notably the surprising and well-done death of Director Leon Vance, which also marked Rocky Carroll’s departure after almost 20 years on the show. However, the season finale also hinted that another member of the NCIS team might be leaving.

The season finale of “Sons and Daughters” ended on a tense note with a confrontation between Tim McGee’s son, Mateo, and Torres. The episode concluded with a dramatic aerial view of Washington D.C., accompanied by a gunshot near the Navy Yard, leaving viewers uncertain about Torres’ fate. This cliffhanger came after a difficult season for the team, following several losses in season 23 of NCIS.

NCIS Season 23 Finale Was Wilmer Valderrama’s 200th Episode In The Show

Wilmer Valderrama recently celebrated a milestone on NCIS, with season 23 being his 200th episode as Torres. He first appeared in the series during season 14, in the premiere episode “Rogue” which aired on September 20, 2016. Torres joined the team because Michael Weatherly’s character, Tony DiNozzo Jr., had left to be with his daughter and search for Ziva David, leaving the team short-staffed.

Since then, Torres has become a main character on NCIS, appearing in almost every episode. Over the past ten years, he’s watched several colleagues leave the team, including Abby, Quinn, Jack, Ellie, and Gibbs, and mourned the loss of Ducky and Vance. Given how important his family history is to his character, killing him off now would be especially heartbreaking for viewers.

How Torres’s NCIS Season 24 Future Might Be Worse Than Death

Death is a recurring element in NCIS, given the dangerous nature of the team’s work. Over the years, the show has seen significant losses, beginning with Kate Todd’s murder in the second season finale. Although showrunner Steven D. Binder has suggested Torres will survive the NCIS season 23 finale, his future is now more complicated due to his recent discoveries about Mateo.

McGee is a devoted father who is working hard to reconnect with his son after years of separation. If Torres shoots Mateo and then hides his motives for wanting to join the agency, it will cause a major conflict with his colleagues on the MCRT. While the team has faced disagreements before, this situation is particularly damaging because they usually work so well together. This feud would occur at a difficult time for NCIS, as LaRoche tries to replace Vance as director.
