Dave Filoni Reveals Why Major Star Wars Villain Wasn’t In More Of The Clone Wars

A major villain was not featured more in Star Wars: The Clone Wars for a strategic reason.

Throughout its seven seasons and 133 episodes, The Clone Wars featured many villains. The Jedi and the Republic often battled characters like Count Dooku, General Grievous, Maul, Mother Talzin, and Asajj Ventress, who later changed her ways. Though Chancellor Sheev Palpatine was a frequent presence, the show rarely depicted him as his Sith Lord persona, Darth Sidious.

Ahead of the premiere of Maul – Shadow Lord, a Star Wars video revisits Maul’s story in The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Dave Filoni explains why Darth Sidious didn’t appear much in The Clone Wars. He says it was partly a technical challenge – Sidious’s hooded cloak was hard to animate early on – and he also wanted to avoid overusing the character, as he’s already the main villain in George Lucas’s films. You can find Filoni’s explanation below.

The reason Sidious appeared mostly as a hologram was a technical one – we simply couldn’t create a convincing physical appearance for him in the earlier seasons of the show. Beyond that, I didn’t think it was crucial to explore Sidious’s backstory extensively in The Clone Wars since he was George Lucas’s primary villain in the films. When using characters so important to the movies, you have to be very careful not to alter their established story or personality.

The series made several changes due to the difficulties of animation. For example, Darth Sidious was initially shown as a hologram. Early seasons also featured Jedi wearing armor instead of their usual robes. This wasn’t a creative decision; it was much easier and more affordable to animate solid armor than the flowing fabric of robes. The same problem applied to Sidious’s cloak. As the show’s animation quality and budget improved, the Jedi were able to wear their robes, and Sidious could appear on screen in person.

Even though Darth Sidious showed up in later seasons, he wasn’t a constant presence. This was intentional – keeping his appearances limited protected his significance in the films and made each time he appeared on the show more meaningful. A prime example is his visit to Mandalore to deal with Maul, who was growing too strong and becoming a threat. As Dave Filoni explained, Sidious was a crucial figure in Maul’s past as his master, so they needed to bring him into the story to demonstrate the Sith’s Rule of Two in action.

The lightsaber fight between Darth Sidious, Maul, and Savage Opress is often ranked among the best in The Clone Wars, showcasing just how powerful Sidious is and how effortlessly he overcomes his opponents. Although the movies already demonstrated his strength, the animated series had kept him largely in the shadows. Seeing him finally unleashed – wielding two lightsabers, defeating Savage, and cruelly electrocuting Maul while laughing – is a truly frightening display of power.

With improvements to the animation in Star Wars and the established importance of Darth Sidious to Maul’s backstory – even before Star Wars: The Clone Wars – it’s possible Darth Sidious could appear in Maul – Shadow Lord, though this hasn’t been officially announced. Maul is currently seeking revenge against the Empire, and while the Inquisitors are trying to stop him, it seems likely that Darth Sidious or Darth Vader will eventually have to step in when the Inquisitors can’t handle him.

The new Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord, will debut on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere on April 6th. New episodes will then be released in pairs each week, continuing through May 4th.
