Hayden Christensen is most famous for playing Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars movies. Since taking on the role in Attack of the Clones back in 2002, his career has largely revolved around the iconic space saga.
Beyond his work on Star Wars, Christensen has directed several other noteworthy films. One example is Shattered Glass, a true story about a journalist who fabricated details to make his stories more exciting. He also directed Awake, a suspenseful horror film that many consider to be a hidden gem in his filmography.
Awake’sTerrifying Premise
The film Awake centers on Clay Beresford, a young man from a privileged background, who experiences a terrifying ordeal during a heart transplant. Though given anesthesia, he unexpectedly wakes up mid-surgery, fully conscious but unable to move.
Completely immobilized, Beresford realizes he can’t trust those around him and that someone is plotting against him. This makes him an unusually helpless hero, with his life in danger but no way to defend himself.
The truly frightening part of this story is that what the character Beresford experiences is a real medical condition, something viewers of medical dramas might recognize. It’s called anesthetic awareness – when a patient receives anesthesia for surgery but wakes up during the procedure, unable to move or communicate. The movie uses this realistic possibility to create a genuinely suspenseful atmosphere.
AwakeGives Hayden Christensen A Very Different Kind Of Role
I was so excited when Awake came out, especially since it was during Hayden Christensen’s break from Star Wars after Revenge of the Sith. It had been 17 years since he played Anakin/Darth Vader, and seeing him return in Obi-Wan Kenobi was amazing! And now he’s in Ahsoka and even season 2 is coming – it’s a dream come true for a fan like me!
In the film Awake, Hayden Christensen takes on a role quite unlike his characters in Star Wars. Instead of a futuristic space setting, this story is much more realistic and down-to-earth. While Star Wars relies on fantastical elements, Awake focuses on a believable and grounded narrative.
Beresford is quite different from Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. He exists in a completely separate world from the Star Wars universe, and unlike Anakin, he isn’t driven by rage or a tendency towards villainy, which become central to Anakin’s story in the prequel films.
