I’ve been completely hooked by this horror movie – it’s seriously one of the best I’ve seen all year, and nobody seems to be talking about it! I think the buzz is starting now, and it might be because Netflix is planning a prequel series soon. It’s definitely gaining traction, and I’m so glad more people are discovering it.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie Slanted, featuring Shirley Chen and McKenna Grace (who will soon be in the new Scooby-Doo movie), is now the most popular film on Paramount+ in the United States. Although it’s not yet a top ten hit globally, Slanted has quickly surpassed other streaming favorites like Top Gun: Maverick and Primate, proving it’s a hit with viewers.
What Is Slanted All About — And Why Is It So Terrifying?
Amy Wang wrote and directed a story about Joan, a Chinese-American high school student who feels insecure about how she’s perceived and struggles to fit in with her white classmates. Determined to win prom queen, Joan tries to conform to stereotypes, only to face an unexpected and unwelcome challenge.
When Joan responds to an offer from the Ethnos clinic, she’s physically changed into someone resembling McKenna Grace’s character, Jo. While she notices the difference right away at school, Jo’s new life quickly reveals difficult realities and intensely disturbing, frightening experiences.
I caught Slanted at South by Southwest, and the initial reaction from critics was generally quite positive. As of today, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a ‘Fresh’ rating of 68% based on 72 reviews. Interestingly, audiences seem to agree – the ‘Popcornmeter’ score, reflecting over 50 fan reviews, is almost identical at 66%. It’s rare to see such alignment between critics and viewers, and it suggests Slanted manages to connect on multiple levels.
Slanted Star McKenna Grace Is About to Held Reinvent Scooby-Doo
After starring in Slanted, McKenna Grace will be featured in a new horror film for Netflix called Scooby-Doo: Origins. Expected in 2027, the movie follows Fred (Maxwell Jenkins), Shaggy (Tanner Hagen), and Velma (Abby Ryder Fortson) during their last summer at Camp Ruby-Spears. Their vacation takes a dark turn when a murder occurs, and a dog named Scooby-Doo may have seen what happened.
I’m really excited about Scooby-Doo: Origins! Not only will we see a fantastic main cast, but Paul Walter Hauser is going to play Scooby’s owner – which I think is a brilliant choice. And I was thrilled to hear that Sara Gilbert, who I loved in Roseanne and The Conners, is joining the project, though they’re keeping her role a secret for now. Of course, it wouldn’t be Scooby-Doo without Frank Welker voicing the big dog himself, and I’m so glad he’s back again!
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, the creative forces behind Midnight Radio, are leading the new series Scooby-Doo: Origins. They’re joined by a team of executive producers including Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman from Berlanti Productions, and André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson from Midnight Radio. Berlanti praised the show, saying Appelbaum and Rosenberg have created a story that perfectly embodies the heart and brilliance of Scooby-Doo.
Slanted is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
