Viewers of Bridgerton have been puzzled by the lack of the show’s original main characters for the past two seasons, and one of the actors who starred from the beginning has explained that she didn’t have a say in the decision.
Season four of Bridgerton has concluded, with this installment focusing on the romance between Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and Sophie (Yerin Ha), in a story reminiscent of Cinderella. Each season of the show follows a different Bridgerton sibling as they find love – the first season centered on Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon (Regé-Jean Page).
Although Simon hasn’t appeared since the first season ended, Daphne returned for a few episodes in season 2 before also leaving the show. In a recent interview with Collider Ladies Night, Dynevor said she hasn’t been contacted about returning, but would be happy to reprise her role if asked. She clarified that she personally would always be open to coming back if the opportunity arose.
Dynevor and Page faced a unique situation compared to other cast members. Because it wasn’t certain if Bridgerton would be renewed, the show’s writers didn’t clearly plan future storylines for them as the main characters of the first season. As Dynevor explained, ‘They didn’t know what needed to be set up when the first season was released.’
It felt like we managed to escape the main storylines, in a way. The couples who will be the focus of the next two seasons – Anthony and Kate, and Colin and Penelope – have remained regular characters. However, it always seemed like Jonathan Bailey (who plays Anthony) was less keen on returning to the show than Phoebe Dynevor.
He really felt he’d joined the show for one specific story arc, and he was happy with how it ended – I totally get that! She also thought it was a smart move for him to leave things as they were, to not mess with something that already felt complete. Since then, he’s been doing amazing, landing big roles in things like Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and You, Me & Tuscany, and I hear he has even more projects coming up!
Although Phoebe Dynevor has appeared in films like Fair Play and Anniversary, many Bridgerton fans still miss her character. It feels increasingly strange that Daphne hasn’t been present for important family events – several weddings and even a funeral – especially considering Dynevor seemed willing to make brief appearances as the character.
The main love story for Bridgerton season 5 will center around Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela (Masali Baduza), and is expected to arrive within the next two years. The show seems to have moved past the character of Daphne, even though it would be natural for her to appear at family events. Now, bringing Phoebe Dynevor back to reprise her role would be a significant development.
