Ridley Scott’s ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ Action Epic Set To Vanish From Streaming

Director Ridley Scott is almost finished with his latest film, a sci-fi thriller called The Dog Stars, scheduled for release in August. The movie boasts a star-studded cast including Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, and Margaret Qualley, continuing Scott’s tradition of working with top actors – something he’s also done for films like Black Hawk Down, Robin Hood, and a recent epic that will soon be removed from streaming services.

Despite boasting a stellar cast including Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, John Turturro, Aaron Paul, Ben Mendelsohn, Sigourney Weaver, and Ben Kingsley, the movie Exodus: Gods and Kings wasn’t a hit with audiences. Released on December 12, 2014, the film faced criticism for its lack of diversity, received poor reviews, and was released during a busy time for holiday movies. Though it cost approximately $200 million to make, it only earned $268 million worldwide, falling short of expectations for director Ridley Scott and 20th Century Fox.

The movie Exodus: Gods and Kings is currently available to watch for free on Tubi, but it will be removed later this month. Though Tubi doesn’t announce specific removal dates, it will likely be gone by April 30th. That gives you less than two weeks to watch this large-scale film for free – which is good, considering many consider it one of director Ridley Scott’s weaker efforts.

‘Exodus: Gods and Kinds’ Was Cloaked in Controversy

The movie Exodus: Gods and Kings retells the well-known biblical story of Moses leading the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. However, the film’s failure wasn’t due to one major flaw, but a combination of issues that ultimately led to its downfall. The biggest source of criticism was the casting of the actors.

The film Exodus: Gods and Kings, featuring Christian Bale as Moses, Joel Paul as Joshua, and Sigourney Weaver as Ramses II’s mother, faced significant criticism for casting white actors to play characters who were historically Egyptian and Middle Eastern. This ‘whitewashing’ controversy became the main focus of discussion around the movie, and ultimately discouraged many people from seeing it.

Viewers who dismissed the early concerns were ultimately left with a visually impressive but emotionally empty film. While the production design and costumes were beautiful, Christian Bale’s performance as Moses didn’t resonate with audiences. The movie felt incomplete, unsure of its own identity. Although Ridley Scott deserves credit for attempting an ambitious, realistic take on a biblical story, it simply didn’t work.

‘The Dog Stars’ Will Be a Return to Form for Ridley Scott

Scott’s upcoming film, The Dog Stars, based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, is expected to be a strong return to his signature style. He excels at directing films within specific genres – like the science fiction of Blade Runner, The Martian, and Alien – and this new thriller appears to be a perfect fit.

After a devastating flu pandemic, the film The Dog Stars follows a pilot (Elordi) and a former marine (Brolin) as they journey across a ruined world to investigate a strange radio signal. It will be released in theaters on August 28th by 20th Century Studios.
