Before becoming a villain in Daredevil and facing off against Matt Murdock, Vincent D’Onofrio played a detective in a different TV series. He generally had a good time working on the show, but there was one aspect he didn’t care for.
Vincent D’Onofrio recently discussed his time on Law & Order: Criminal Intent in an interview with GQ. He remembered being offered the part, which was his first big television role, and initially feeling a little hesitant. However, he was convinced to take the job after reading a script written by the show’s original creator, René Balcer.
Vincent D’Onofrio Joined the Law & Order Family
D’Onofrio explained that Dick Wolf approached him about a possible TV role. He hadn’t done much television work before, mostly just a few guest appearances early in his career, so he was unfamiliar with being a main actor on a show like that.
The actor fondly recalled enjoying his time on the show, noting its unique style. Unlike Criminal Intent, where episodes usually concluded with confessions obtained through tough interrogations, this series was different. While he valued the strong writing, he admitted he disliked the lengthy shooting schedules.
Working on the show was incredibly draining for both Kate Erbe and me. We consistently worked around 17 hours a day, every day, for ten months out of the year, which was really difficult. I didn’t enjoy it at all, and I’m happy that those kinds of long hours are no longer permitted for actors.
He remains thankful for the opportunity, explaining that the show significantly improved his acting skills. The constant need to memorize lines and navigate unusual scene changes pushed him to grow in ways he hadn’t anticipated. He believes he wouldn’t have developed as an actor without it.
Vincent D’Onofrio More Recently Can Be Seen in Daredevil: Born Again
Vincent D’Onofrio starred as Robert Goren throughout all ten seasons of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, working with actors like Kathryn Erbe, Chris Noth, and Jeff Goldblum. Though he was only in a few episodes of Season 9, he returned as a main cast member for the show’s tenth and final season. In 2015, he took on another significant TV role, debuting as Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, in the Daredevil series, which ran for three seasons until 2018.
Vincent D’Onofrio has recently reprised his role as Kingpin in the Disney+ series, currently in its second season. He also stars in the show Godfather of Harlem. In film, he most recently appeared in Caught Stealing, a crime thriller directed by Darren Aronofsky released last year.
