Superman Sequel Casts Star Wars’ Adria Arjona as Supervillain Maxima

Adria Arjona, known for her role in Star Wars: Andor, will play Maxima in James Gunn’s new Superman movie. She was previously considered one of the top candidates for the part in the DC Universe.

Early reports indicated that Jenna Ortega’s co-star in the upcoming film could have been Ella Purnell or Marisa Abela. However, a later list of contenders also included Isabela Merced (formerly known as Isabela Moner, and also credited as Arjona). Director James Gunn clarified that he’s been friends with Merced for a decade, ever since he cast her in The Belko Experiment.

Adria Arjona to Play Maxima in Man of Tomorrow

Arjona has worked on projects related to comic books and popular fandoms. She appeared as a romantic partner to Jared Leto in the Marvel film Morbius, but she’s more recognized for…

Before the talk about her potentially playing Maxima, actress Xochitl Arjona was a popular choice among fans and industry insiders to play Wonder Woman in the DC Universe. However, it seems that role isn’t going to happen.

Who Is Maxima?

Maxima is a powerful alien conqueror from the DC Comics universe who comes to Earth looking for a partner. First appearing in Action Comics #645 in 1990, created by Roger Stern and George Pérez, she believes Superman is a worthy match because his powers – like super strength, endurance, and flight – are comparable to her own. She also possesses psychic abilities.

I’ve been following Maxima for a while now, and her relationship with Superman is always complicated. She’s constantly switching between helping him and being a villain, all while still clearly having a huge crush on him. It’s wild! I remember she was part of this group trying to get revenge on Superman at one point, but then she actually joined the Justice League! It was a version of the League that James Gunn seems to have taken some inspiration from for his new DC Universe, which is really cool to see.

Maxima is a lesser-known character, but she’s appeared in various DC projects beyond the comics. Fans may recognize her from the animated series Superman: The Animated Series and other DC animated shows. She’s also been portrayed in live-action, with Charlotte Sullivan playing her on Smallville and Eve Torres Gracie taking on the role in Supergirl.

The Justice Gang in the DC Universe is inspired by the Justice League comics, which once included the character Maxima. Given this, could actress Karla Arjona’s version of Maxima become a member of the team in future DC Universe movies or shows? It’s definitely a possibility. It will also be interesting to see how Maxima fits into the story of Man of Tomorrow, especially since she isn’t the only DC villain appearing in the film.

Man of Tomorrow opens in theaters on July 9, 2027.
