While you won’t find typical disaster scenarios like zombies or nuclear war, The Testaments paints a chilling picture of an apocalypse. The story takes place while the rest of the world continues as usual, but the United States has fallen into a controlling, oppressive regime where women are subjugated and religion is used as a tool for political power. And, like all great apocalyptic stories, there…
We started by discussing the world Lydia and Vidala inhabited – what life was like for them. Understanding that original world is crucial, because it highlights what they lost. This is also important for The Testaments, as it helps us understand the girls’ motivations for building their comfortable lives and what they risk if that world ever falls apart. Essentially, our first question was: who were Vivian and Lydia before everything changed?
I revisited Aunt Lydia’s flashback scenes from The Handmaid’s Tale and discussed them with Ann Dowd. We also had an extensive conversation with Mabel Li about her character’s history. It was crucial to build a detailed and believable backstory for her, so the impact of losing it would be deeply felt by the audience.
The flashbacks reveal Lydia and Vidala – known as Vivian before Gilead – worked together as teachers. Their school was seized by Gilead’s forces when the Sons of Jacob took control of the government. A key moment occurs when their coworker, Keith, is shot and killed by a soldier, marking a turning point in the story.
As a film lover, what really struck me about that scene with Keith – seeing it unfold through the window – was just how brutal it was. It wasn’t just the violence itself, but how those men treated each other, and then the women, with absolutely no regard or remorse. They just acted, and moved on, like nothing happened. It’s chilling to think that something like that could happen so suddenly, that laws could shift and this kind of thing could just erupt in everyday life.
How The Testaments Director Deals With the Show’s Dark Themes
As a film fan, I’ve noticed both movies really don’t pull any punches – they tackle tough subjects like extremist groups and violence against women in a way that’s often deeply unsettling. Even the production design was intense! The director told me setting up the flashback scenes, particularly recreating the stadium environment, was genuinely frightening. He was talking about bringing in all the military vehicles, picking out the right tanks, and having actors with guns positioned everywhere – it was all designed to create this feeling that something terrible could happen at any moment, and apparently, that atmosphere was really palpable on set.
Wilkinson discovered a crucial method for maintaining composure when dealing with challenging material. She explained that preparation focuses entirely on facts and practical details. It’s almost necessary to create emotional distance to effectively do the job. She believes a film set needs a director who remains level-headed, allowing the actors and crew the freedom to experience their own emotions.
Still, Wilkinson felt it was crucial not to ignore they were creating.
It’s crucial to recognize the significance of the task at hand and openly discuss how challenging the day will be. Everyone involved needs to feel valued and appreciated. While I’m grateful for their commitment, the focus then shifts to completing the work. People need to be confident in the plan and rely on strong leadership to guide them through what will be a long, difficult, and demanding day. They need someone to be a source of strength and support.
New episodes of The Testaments premiere every Wednesday on Hulu.
