Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the final episode of the Scrubs revival, “My Celebration.” While this season’s finale has aired, there’s a possibility the show will return for another season. Although currently the last confirmed episode, “My Celebration” feels less like a definitive ending and more like a pause. The show’s creators clearly have future plans, and the episode wraps up storylines for both new and returning characters in a generally satisfying way while also hinting at what a potential Season 2 might entail.
It’s not surprising that ABC initially ordered only nine episodes for the revival of Scrubs, considering how long the show had been off television. However, the revival has been so well-received that ABC’s cautious approach now seems a bit too hesitant. While a second season hasn’t been officially confirmed, the show’s continued success suggests it’s only a matter of time. The episode “My Celebration” perfectly captures this feeling and lays the groundwork for what could come next. Let’s take a look at how it sets up Season 2.
Dr. Park Working on Being Nicer to His Colleagues

Because John C. McGinley’s Dr. Cox wasn’t heavily featured in the first season of the Scrubs revival, the show needed another character to fill a similar role. Joel Kim Booster’s Dr. Park isn’t a direct replacement, but he shares Dr. Cox’s tendency to be sharply critical. So far, Dr. Park’s quick wit and sarcastic remarks have been a highlight, subtly echoing Cox’s famous tirades. However, the original series allowed Dr. Cox to become a more complex character over time, and Dr. Park hasn’t had the same opportunity yet.
The final episode of Season 1, “My Celebration,” clearly shows Park wanting to improve his relationships with his colleagues. While we’ve seen glimpses of his softer side before, this episode strongly suggests he’s realizing that being unkind isn’t working for him anymore. His conversation with Nurse Dubois especially highlights how his behavior is isolating him from the possibility of forming close bonds with his coworkers, and I’m excited to see if he’ll try to be more open and become a better part of the hospital team in Season 2.
The Volatile Romantic Pairings Between the New ‘Scrubs’ Interns

During the first season of the show’s return, Asher (Jacob Dudman) and Amara (Layla Mohammadi) seemed destined to become the central romantic pairing. While they had chemistry, the season ended with them going their separate ways without ever officially becoming a couple. The new season appears to be heading in a different direction, hinting at a relationship between Asher and Sam (Ava Bunn). At the same time, the show is suggesting a potential romance between Blake (David Gridley) and Amara, even though it feels a bit forced.
Currently, Dashana (Amanda Borrow) is the only character actively seeking a relationship outside of her colleagues and the hospital. Considering how much Scrubs has already changed things up in this area over the last nine episodes, it’s likely this trend will continue into Season 2. Asher and Amara might get back together after Mohammadi’s character explores her desire for independence, and we could also see new interns introduced who could become potential partners for the show’s newer characters. At this point, really anything could happen.
JD’s Blooming Romance With Charlie

The Scrubs revival is adding Rachel Bilson from The O.C. to the show, starting with the season finale. The episode quickly pairs her character with another, sending them on a spontaneous date to a wedding. While they appear to hit it off, it’s still unclear where this relationship might go. However, considering Bilson’s popularity, it’s probable that her character, Charlie, will be a recurring part of the show.
“My Celebration” is a reunion for Braff and Bilson. They co-starred in 2006’s The Last Kiss.
The biggest question is whether introducing Charlie will ruin any possibility of JD and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) getting back together. They seem happier now that they’re divorced, and the show has strongly suggested they’ve moved on romantically. So, could Charlie be JD’s new chance at happiness? It might depend on if JD keeps prioritizing work and caring for Dr. Cox over his personal life, like we saw hinted at in the last scene of “My Celebration.”
The Janitor Claiming To Have Real Power Over JD for the First Time

The rivalry between J.D. and the Janitor (played by Neil Flynn) was a highlight of the original show, and fans were thrilled when Flynn returned in the revival’s “My Celebration” episode after being absent for much of the season. Now, the Janitor claims to be the Lead Custodian for the Joint Commission, giving him the power to inspect Sacred Heart Hospital and point out any health or safety violations to J.D.
The Janitor rarely does his job, and it seems his main goal is just to annoy the new Chief of Medicine – often with elaborate pranks, like trying to give JD a bomb disguised as a toaster. While he’s always messed with JD, this is the first time he’s had some real leverage to do so. This shift in their relationship promises hilarious moments in Season 2 of Scrubs, and will likely overshadow even the biggest surprises of the season.
The Inefficacy of Dr. Cox’s Medical Treatment

As a long-time Scrubs viewer, I have to say Episode 8, “My Odds,” really hit hard. Seeing Dr. Cox collapse and then learning about his diagnosis was genuinely shocking. I, like JD, initially held onto hope that they could slow down the autoimmune disease and give him more time. But, unfortunately, that optimism was misplaced. The season finale confirms my fears – the treatment JD was hoping for just isn’t working on Dr. Cox, and they’re going to have to look at other options. It’s a tough blow, and honestly, a really heartbreaking moment for the show.
With cast and crew members largely confirming Dr. Cox will have a more significant role in Season 2, this new health issue doesn’t come as much of a surprise. It’s been challenging to include Dr. Cox in the revival since his retirement, as his character wasn’t currently part of the Sacred Heart staff. By giving him a serious medical condition, Scrubs Season 2 provides a way to keep him actively involved – this time as a patient.
