Musicals have historically had a tough time succeeding at the box office, especially those adapted from Broadway hits. Films like *Cats* and Steven Spielberg’s *West Side Story* didn’t perform well, though for different reasons—*Cats* was simply a flawed film, and that’s putting it mildly. However, Jon M. Chu’s *Wicked* proved to be an exception, earning $756 million globally and is now setting new records.
As reported by *Deadline*, the musical *Wicked: For Good* has broken the record for the most first-day ticket presales in 2025. After tickets went on sale earlier this week, the total sales within the first 24 hours were higher than those for other popular events this year, including *Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle*, *Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl*, and *Superman*.
The second *Wicked* movie has achieved a remarkable feat, ranking among the top 10 films of all time for first-day ticket pre-sales on Fandango. It’s in impressive company, alongside blockbusters like *Avengers: Endgame, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Frozen*, and *The Lion King*. It also broke records, becoming the PG-rated movie with the highest volume of first-day ticket sales ever. This is especially noteworthy given concerns that the first *Wicked* film might not succeed when it was released last November. The strong performance of *Wicked: Part One* clearly created huge anticipation for the sequel.
After the incredible success of last year’s ‘Wicked,’ which thrilled audiences globally, it’s no surprise people are eager to buy tickets for ‘Wicked: For Good,’ according to Jerramy Hainline, a top executive at Fandango. The first movie was a huge cultural event, introducing ‘Wicked’ to a new generation, and fans are excited to see what happens next in the film adaptation.
‘Wicked: For Good’ Can Surpass Its Predecessor

Universal Pictures
Dividing a film into two parts is risky. If the first movie doesn’t succeed – like with *Fast X*, *Horizon: Chapter 1*, and *Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning* – it can be difficult to release the second one. Had *Wicked: Part One* failed in theaters, the second film likely wouldn’t have done much better.
The movie *Wicked* was a huge success, becoming the highest-grossing film ever adapted from a Broadway show. Now, *Wicked: For Good* is expected to be even more popular. With the first movie readily available on streaming and on-demand, many more people are discovering the story, and that’s likely to draw even bigger crowds to theaters for this concluding film – especially to experience the powerful music and songs on the big screen.
Wicked: For Good is released on November 26, 2025.
