After decades of being stuck in development, a big-budget live-action movie based on the classic ’80s cartoon Voltron: Defender of the Universe is now set to be released worldwide. Director Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for Red Notice, finally got the project approved, and by late 2024, the cast was revealed, featuring stars like Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, and even Henry Cavill.
Filming finished in May 2026 after a year, and fans eagerly awaited news about the movie. Sadly, the update arrived at an Amazon MGM presentation revealing the film wouldn’t be released in theaters. Instead, it would premiere directly on Prime Video. This announcement caused a huge reaction online, with many fans fearing the movie would be forgotten before anyone even saw it.
Voltron Has Major Theatrical Potential That Won’t Be Realized
Although the exact budget for the Voltron movie hasn’t been revealed, estimates range from $100 to $150 million. This high cost is understandable given the scope of the story: a group of teenagers are taken from Earth and thrust into a massive galactic war, where they pilot giant robotic lions. They must learn to work together to form Voltron, a colossal robot that’s essential to winning the war. Essentially, the movie is a large-scale space adventure, which means it requires a huge amount of computer-generated imagery.
Given its premise, it’s easy to see why Voltron could be a major success in movie theaters, and generate huge sales from merchandise. It’s a concept that could be described as Star Wars combined with Transformers, with a touch of Power Rangers. Considering the existing, dedicated fanbase – demonstrated by the show’s 78 episodes across eight seasons and its successful toy line – Voltron has all the ingredients to become a major movie franchise.
Why Has Amazon MGM Chosen To Send Voltron Straight-to-Streaming?
Even with the potential for a big cinematic release, Amazon MGM has chosen to debut its large-scale sci-fi film on streaming instead of in IMAX theaters. Fans were quick to voice their disappointment online, questioning why a movie with blockbuster potential – similar to films that have earned $660 million in theaters – wouldn’t get a proper theatrical release. This decision seems especially surprising given the studio’s willingness to invest in adapting ’80s cartoons for the big screen, as evidenced by their upcoming theatrical release of ‘Masters of the Universe’ on June 5, 2026 – a project they actually purchased from Netflix to make into a movie.
It’s puzzling why Amazon MGM released such a large-scale, visually intensive robot action movie directly to streaming instead of theaters. However, there are a few possible reasons. Recent streaming-exclusive films like Heads of State and Play Dirty have performed very well, demonstrating that Amazon’s subscribers are happy to watch action movies on the service.
The studio has likely been watching how Voltron has performed over time, but they aren’t as optimistic as fans about its potential in theaters. If they’re unsure about the movie’s quality, releasing it directly on streaming could help them avoid a disappointing box office result. There’s also another reason for this decision, and it might not be good news for Henry Cavill fans.
Cavill’s Track Record at the Box Office Isn’t Particularly Strong
While Henry Cavill has a strong reputation as a leading man, his films haven’t consistently performed well at the box office. Looking at the last decade, his movies tend to succeed only when they’re based on well-known franchises, like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016 and 2018). Justice League (2017) didn’t fare as well. If you set aside his appearances in established universes like Black Adam, The Flash, and his cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s clear that Cavill hasn’t been a consistent draw for audiences with original films for quite some time.
Recent movie releases haven’t been successful for Henry Cavill. For instance, Argylle earned less than half of what it cost to make before moving to AppleTV+, and his other two films with Guy Ritchie both failed to gain traction with audiences. In fact, Cavill’s recent successes have mainly come from streaming platforms. He’s been well-received as Sherlock Holmes in the Enola Holmes series on Netflix, with a third movie coming out this summer. Also, his role as Geralt of Rivia, the monster hunter in The Witcher, proved popular with both fans of the video game and new viewers, during the first three seasons.
Considering Amazon MGM’s past experiences, they might not think Henry Cavill can attract a large enough audience to make Voltron a mainstream success, beyond its existing fans. While fans would likely be thrilled to see him as King Alfor, it’s questionable whether his name alone would convince someone unfamiliar with the show to go to the theater. It’s an open question. However, another factor complicates things: Cavill also stars in Rebel Moon, which is planned for a wide theatrical release. The studio might believe Rebel Moon already has a dedicated audience that will ensure its success, or they may think Cavill is more likely to draw viewers to a mature, action-packed fantasy than a CGI-heavy space adventure.
While streaming releases can quickly gain a lot of viewers, they often don’t have the lasting impact of movies released in theaters. Streaming films are usually watched once and then quickly overshadowed by new content. Did Amazon MGM hurt Voltron‘s chances of becoming a truly iconic, long-lasting blockbuster by releasing it only on Prime Video? Sadly, that’s not just a possibility—it’s very probable.
