The next Spider-Man movie will be a fresh start for the character, taking him in a new direction. While Spider-Man has been successfully portrayed on screen before – by Tobey Maguire in three films, Andrew Garfield in two, and Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s trilogy – this 2026 project will tell a completely different story.
Tom Holland is confirmed to reprise his role as Spider-Man in the upcoming movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, set to release this July. This film, following the 2021 crossover Spider-Man: No Way Home which featured three Spider-Men, will kick off a new chapter for the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite this fresh start, the movie will maintain the same genre fans are used to.
So far, the Spider-Man movies have followed a pretty familiar formula. Both Marvel and Sony’s films are classic superhero adventures, but they haven’t really broken new ground creatively. However, that’s about to change dramatically, and it will happen very soon – within the next week, before the end of May.
I’m so excited for the new direction Spider-Man is taking! It’s not Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day that’s shaking things up, but the Spider-Noir series coming to Prime Video. Nicolas Cage is playing Ben Reilly, also known as The Spider, and it’s going to be a really interesting take on the character. It’s debuting on MGM+ on May 25th, and then hitting Prime Video on May 27th – a pretty unusual release strategy, but I’m here for it!
Prime Video’s Spider-Noir Offers A Major Genre Change For Marvel’s Spider-Man
As the name suggests, Prime Video’s Spider-Noir draws heavily from the traditional style of film noir. Joaquin Phoenix, who plays Ben Reilly, modeled his performance after classic actors like Humphrey Bogart. Unlike most Spider-Man stories, which are fast-paced and fun, Spider-Noir is a gritty crime drama. It focuses on Ben Reilly, an older, retired superhero who now works as a private detective. While trailers for the Spider-Man TV show hint at typical superhero action, this series offers something different.
This isn’t your typical Spider-Man story. If you’re expecting a classic superhero adventure in Spider-Noir, you’ll be surprised. With its dark, film noir style – which will be even more striking in the black and white Prime Video series (though a full-color version is also available) – the story is more of a hard-boiled detective tale featuring a hero with extraordinary abilities. This shift in genre makes it a great entry point for those who enjoy crime dramas but aren’t necessarily fans of superhero stories. It’s a more grown-up take on Spider-Man.
The Spider-Man TV Show’s Genre Change Will Become Even More Impactful In 2 Months
Following the release of Spider-Noir next week, the contrast in styles will become clearer on July 31st with the arrival of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This new film, featuring characters like the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Scorpion (Michael Mando), and potentially Tombstone (Marvin Jones III), is expected to be similar to Spider-Noir by focusing on gritty, street-level crime. However, highlighting these shared elements will actually emphasize how distinct the two Spider-Man movies are from each other.
Although the movie and TV show both deal with Spider-Man, they present him in very different ways. The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day feels familiar to fans of live-action Marvel films, while Spider-Noir offers a fresh and unusual perspective on the character and his universe. Both versions should be successful, but after watching Spider-Noir, returning to the traditional Spider-Man stories will feel like a significant change in style.
