The Devil Wears Prada 2 Box Office Outgrosses OG Movie’s Entire Domestic Run In Just 3 Days

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is strutting past the original movie at the box office.

The 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, based on the popular novel by Lauren Weisberger, was a huge success, ranking as the 12th highest-grossing movie worldwide that year (and the 6th highest that wasn’t part of an existing franchise). The upcoming 2026 sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, aims to recreate that success by bringing back the original director, David Frankel, screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, and stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci. The new film will also feature fresh faces like Justin Theroux, Simone Ashley, Caleb Hearon, Kenneth Branagh, and Lucy Liu.

According to Deadline, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is expected to earn over $223 million worldwide by the end of its opening weekend. This includes approximately $77 million in the US and $146 million internationally. This is a significant achievement, as it already exceeds the total domestic earnings of the first The Devil Wears Prada movie, which made $124.7 million in North America after opening with $27.5 million.

The new Devil Wears Prada movie has already earned more than the original’s inflation-adjusted domestic total of $203 million. The original film made $326.5 million worldwide, which translates to $531.4 million when accounting for inflation. Although the sequel still needs to earn a significant amount more, it’s possible it could ultimately surpass even that higher, inflation-adjusted figure by the time it finishes playing in theaters.

If the 2026 sequel performs like the first Devil Wears Prada movie, it’s projected to earn around $900 million worldwide. This would not only exceed the original film’s earnings when adjusted for inflation, but also be highly profitable. Although the sequel reportedly cost $100 million to make—a considerable increase from the original’s $40 million budget—it only needs to earn about $250 million to break even, a milestone it’s expected to easily surpass.

Whether the new movie will be as popular with audiences as the first one is still unknown. The original was both critically acclaimed and a box office success, earning two Oscar nominations (Best Costume Design and Best Actress for Meryl Streep) and winning Meryl Streep a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.

Interestingly, reviews for The Devil Wears Prada 2 are a little more positive than those for the first film. Currently, critics give it a 77% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences score it even higher at 88%. The original movie received scores of 75% from critics and 76% from audiences.

If The Devil Wears Prada 2 does really well and makes close to a billion dollars, a third movie could easily happen. Although it took two decades for a sequel to be made, the current trend of studios using popular titles means another film starring Miranda Priestly in the next few years is definitely possible.
