Star Wars Meets Game Of Thrones In Apple TV’s Ambitious 3-Part Sci-Fi Masterpiece

Combining the worlds of Star Wars and Game of Thrones seems like a difficult task, but Apple TV’s top sci-fi series does it successfully. Despite the lack of new Star Trek shows—something that hasn’t happened since 2017—science fiction television is currently enjoying a boom in quality and popularity.

Cyberpunk enthusiasts have two new shows to look forward to: the upcoming Neuromancer on Apple TV+ and Blade Runner: 2099 on Prime Video. For those who enjoy darkly humorous and critical stories about society, Apple TV+’s Severance is a standout. But it’s Apple TV+’s Foundation – a grand adaptation of the classic novels – that’s really pushing the boundaries of space opera, successfully combining elements of both Star Wars and Game of Thrones.

Foundation Blends Game Of Thrones and Star Wars In Its Ambitious Sci-fi Story

Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed series, Foundation, is a three-season adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s classic novels. Set far in the future, the show centers around the Empire, a galactic power ruled by a trio of clones: Brother Day, played by Lee Pace, is the current ruler; Brother Dawn is being trained as his successor; and Brother Dusk serves as an advisor.

Gaal Dornick, a brilliant mathematician played by Lou Llobell, gains prominence after winning a galactic competition with an impressive solution to a difficult problem. This victory quickly pulls her into the intricate political landscape of the Foundation universe. It doesn’t take long for audiences to realize that while the Empire appears to be in charge, it’s actually Demerzel, a seemingly human robot portrayed by Laura Birn, who is truly calling the shots.

Jared Harris plays Hari Seldon, a mathematics professor who develops a revolutionary theory called psychohistory with his colleague, Gaal Dornick. Psychohistory allows for surprisingly accurate predictions of large-scale human behavior. Seldon’s work foretells the collapse of the Empire, prompting the ruling Cleon clones to attempt to use his and Dornick’s research to hold onto their power.

Foundation’s Complex Plotting Avoids A Major Star Wars Mistake

The show Foundation has a complicated story with lots of twists, secrets, and characters who aren’t who they seem, making it feel similar to Game of Thrones. At the same time, with its vast scope, declining empire, and futuristic setting, it also resembles a more grown-up and detailed Star Wars story.

Okay, so this Apple TV show really hits the sweet spot. It expertly blends the best elements of both Star Wars and Game of Thrones while cleverly sidestepping their pitfalls. What I’ve noticed is that Star Wars, aiming for a broader audience, often keeps its stories relatively straightforward. Game of Thrones, with its mature rating, could dive into incredibly complex narratives. This show manages to balance that – it’s got depth and nuance, but it’s still accessible and engaging for pretty much anyone.

Luckily, Foundation avoids this problem. Because it’s designed for adult audiences, the Apple TV sci-fi series can explore complex and mature ideas without needing to worry about what younger viewers might think. This allows Foundation‘s mix of Star Wars and Game of Thrones to feel both more sophisticated and grittier than similar shows.
