As a critic, I have to say Disney is really leaning into nostalgia with its latest sitcom revival, and it’s clearly working – the show has broken streaming records right out of the gate. It’s a huge hit, tapping into that warm, fuzzy feeling for older fans while still trying to appeal to a new audience.
Disney is well-known for bringing back beloved shows and movies, whether it’s recreating animated films with live actors or reviving popular series like Wizards of Waverly Place. Through its 20th Television studio, Disney has also brought back shows like Scrubs on ABC and Hulu. Now, another one of these revivals is on track to become a streaming hit.
The revival of the popular sitcom, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, has already broken a streaming record on Hulu after just three days. Created by Linwood Boomer, the new series follows Malcolm, now married with a daughter, as he returns home to celebrate his parents, Hal and Lois’, 40th wedding anniversary. The original Malcolm in the Middle aired on Fox from 2000 to 2006.
As reported by Deadline, the premiere of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair was a big hit, attracting 8.1 million viewers worldwide in its first three days. This made it the most-watched season premiere of any show on Disney+ and Hulu so far this year. In Latin America, the revival was the second most popular season premiere on Disney+, with 3.6 million views – only surpassed by the first season of Loki.
The four-part revival premiered on April 10th on Hulu (in the US) and Disney+ (internationally). It quickly brought renewed attention to the original series, leading to a significant jump in viewership – an increase of 18 million hours, or 107%, compared to the previous week.
The new season of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair brings back the original cast – Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Masterson, Emy Coligado, and Justin Berfield – along with several new faces. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, Anthony Timpano, Vaughan Murrae, Keeley Karsten, and Kiana Madeira are joining the show as fresh characters.
The show’s return has been a hit with viewers and critics alike, breaking streaming records and earning an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers praise its ability to recapture the original series’ signature brand of chaotic comedy, but with a fresh, energetic feel. In a review for ScreenRant, Kara Hedash gave Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair a score of 5 out of 10 and wrote:
Bryan Cranston is a highlight of Hulu’s new ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ revival, ‘Life’s Still Unfair.’ While the revival isn’t perfect and its shorter length holds it back from fully exploring its potential, the return of familiar characters and Cranston’s comedic talent make it worth watching.
Viewers are loving the new season of Malcolm in the Middle, with strong streaming numbers and a 73% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
