The popular movie series is coming back to theaters after a decade! Paramount Pictures is working on a brand new film, and we’re starting to learn more about it.
Late last year, Paramount announced that Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley would be writing, producing, and directing a new Star Trek movie. At a recent panel discussion at San Diego Comic-Con, the directors explained that the film won’t continue the story of the 2016 movie, Star Trek Beyond. Instead, it will feature a new cast and take place sometime after the events of the previous films.
New Characters Take the Lead in the Future
Goldstein explained that the new installment will feature characters we haven’t met yet, and take place sometime after the events of the previous stories.
Several key details about the new movie remain unknown. While the franchise has often used time jumps, the filmmakers haven’t revealed exactly how far into the future this one will take place. The previous film, Starfleet Academy, was set centuries ahead of earlier Star Trek shows like The Original Series and The Next Generation, but it still managed to include familiar characters through the use of holograms. It’s currently unclear whether—or how—this new film will connect to the existing Star Trek stories and timeline.
Fans had been eagerly awaiting Star Trek 4 after enjoying the previous three films. For over ten years, there was talk of a sequel to Star Trek Beyond, but it never happened. Now, with Starfleet Academy not doing well on Paramount+, the studio seems to be hoping a new Star Trek movie with an entirely new cast will breathe new life into the series.
The Star Trek Movies’ Cast Isn’t Involved With the New Film
Chris Pine claims he’s just as much in the dark about the new film as everyone else. Some people thought he might have inside information since he collaborated with the directors on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. When asked for advice for them, Pine jokingly responded with a nod to his former role, saying, “Have fun, good luck, and live long and prosper.”
Although the release date for the new Star Trek film hasn’t been announced, there’s still plenty more content on the way. Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered on July 23rd, with new episodes being released each week through September 24th. Next year, Paramount+ will also release the final season of Strange New Worlds, as well as the second season of another series.
