Game of Thrones featured many memorable characters, like Ned Stark, portrayed by Sean Bean, who was a good man but not very skilled at political maneuvering. While the show was known for shocking deaths, Ned Stark’s at the end of the first season felt somewhat inevitable, given Sean Bean’s history of dying in his roles. Despite this, viewers didn’t get to know Ned very well, and learned most about him through what his children said and short glimpses into his past.
Before the events of Game of Thrones, Ned Stark lived a full life, and a key part of his story was Robert Baratheon’s rebellion. Now that a stage play about the rebellion is planned, it’s likely we’ll also see it adapted into a TV show or movie. While Sean Bean famously played Ned Stark, this new adaptation will allow a different actor to portray a younger version of the character.
Robert Aramayo
Robert Aramayo would be a natural fit to play a younger Ned Stark, largely because he’s already portrayed the character. He appeared as young Ned in seasons 6 and 7, specifically in flashback sequences that highlighted a more hopeful side of him. Those episodes, like “The Tower of Joy,” showcased both his sword-fighting skills and emotional range – abilities he’s continued to demonstrate in roles like Elrond in The Rings of Power.
Look, as someone who really enjoyed Game of Thrones, I’ve always liked Joe Aramayo. He feels like a safe bet for a Ned Stark prequel, honestly. But it’s tricky – Ned was pretty young during the original story, around 20, and Aramayo might be a little too mature for the role now, even though he’s a great actor. He even admitted himself that it’s been a while since he played Ned and he might not be the best fit anymore, which I appreciate his honesty about.
Sebastian Croft
While Robert Aramayo is famous for playing young Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, another actor actually portrayed an even younger version of the character. Sebastian Croft appeared in two episodes during season 6 as a boy Ned. Because he’s currently in his twenties, he’s a more age-appropriate choice for Ned during the time of the rebellion and could be considered as an alternative for the role.
Joe Croft hasn’t recently focused on action roles or stunts; he’s become known for his work in the coming-of-age series Heartstopper. This experience with emotionally driven storytelling makes him well-suited to portray the complexities of Lyanna’s character. While Croft is also pursuing a career in music, the role seems like an opportunity he won’t want to miss.
Dane DeHaan
Although Dane DeHaan hasn’t appeared in Game of Thrones, he often portrays characters with a similar serious and burdened personality as Ned Stark, leading to frequent comparisons. His roles as Jacob in American Primeval and Chris in ZeroZeroZero both showcase this intensity, with both characters seeming to carry a heavy weight on their shoulders, much like Ned Stark.
While their similar looks are a plus, Dane DeHaan would need to work on his American accent, considering Sean Bean’s authentic Yorkshire accent defined his portrayal of Ned Stark. However, Game of Thrones featured many actors successfully altering their natural accents, with some delivering fantastic performances even while sounding quite different from their characters. So, DeHaan’s accent shouldn’t necessarily disqualify him from the role.
Charlie Rowe
While Ned Stark is often portrayed as reserved, he actually has several very emotional moments in Game of Thrones. He’s also a skilled warrior, though the show usually hints at this rather than directly showing it. Finding the right actor to play him is challenging, but Charlie Rowe could be a good fit. He’s proven he can handle dramatic, historical roles, like his performance as George Osborne in Vanity Fair.
Actor Alex Rowe successfully portrayed a younger version of the main character in the comedy-drama Jay Kelly, demonstrating his ability to convincingly play a character at an earlier point in their life. While his character may be chronologically older than Ned Stark during Robert’s Rebellion, Rowe appears youthful enough to potentially reprise the role in a limited series, rather than the long-running production of the original Game of Thrones.
Jack McMullen
I’ve always admired Jack McMullen’s work in dramas like This City is Ours and Time – he really excels at those gritty, realistic stories. It’s interesting, because there’s a similar darkness to some scenes in those shows and even in Winterfell, and it’s not just a coincidence they all feature Sean Bean. In fact, McMullen actually played Sean Bean’s son in This City is Ours, and he was so convincing, it felt completely natural! It really showcased his talent and made their on-screen connection believable.
Though he doesn’t have as much experience with fantasy or historical dramas as some other actors being considered, that might actually work well for Ned Stark. Stark is a very down-to-earth and realistic character within the often fantastical world of Game of Thrones. McMullen has proven he can play characters struggling with difficult choices, which is key to the story of Robert’s rebellion. While he might be a surprising pick, he’s certainly not an impossible one.
Owen Cooper
Owen Cooper gained widespread recognition, including an Emmy Award, for his work in Adolescence, quickly establishing him as a rising star. Though only 16, he’s already demonstrated an ability to handle complex and emotionally demanding roles. While he hasn’t yet appeared in a period piece, that’s about to change with his upcoming role in the historical tragedy Cry to Heaven, currently in post-production and scheduled for release in 2027.
Cooper is a young, up-and-coming actor who was 16 years old when this was written. He’s currently younger than the character Ned as written in the story. However, if the show were made in a few years, Cooper would be the perfect age for the role and would have more acting experience to prepare.
Alfie Williams
Alfie Williams shines in both 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple, demonstrating his ability to portray characters with deep emotional burdens. His character, Spike, faces constant danger, builds complicated relationships, and desperately tries to keep a family member safe. Though the 28 Days series is set in a post-apocalyptic world, the emotional journeys of Spike and Ned feel similar to those found in historical dramas.
I’ve been watching a lot of young actors lately, and Williams reminds me a bit of Owen Cooper – a promising talent still finding his footing. Cooper really impressed in his debut, but Williams has already shown glimpses of the skills needed to convincingly play a younger Ned Stark. He’s demonstrated an aptitude for the emotional complexity of the role. Honestly, if he can pick up sword fighting, I think he could be fantastic in the part. He’s definitely one to watch.
Charlie Heaton
Although several actors on this list are the likely candidates to play a young Ned Stark, the team working on the potential Game of Thrones prequel might surprise us with their choice. Charlie Heaton has been in the TV series Industry and is also slated for a role in an upcoming film by Josh Hartnett, but he’s most famous for playing Jonathan Byers in Stranger Things.
Charlie Heaton might seem like an unexpected pick for this role, but he’s actually English, and like Sean Bean, he’s originally from Yorkshire, giving them both a similar accent. While some felt Heaton didn’t have enough to do in the last season of Stranger Things, especially after his powerful scenes in earlier seasons, this new role could give him a chance to showcase his acting skills with a compelling and emotional story.
