Even with a massive budget, one Netflix series didn’t receive a positive response to its final episode, proving that spending more money doesn’t guarantee success in streaming. Most major streaming franchises, no matter who they’re trying to reach, aim to create richly detailed and immersive worlds. This is true for both adult-oriented shows like the Critical Role spin-offs The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein on Prime Video, and more family-friendly shows like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. In the wake of Game of Thrones, big-budget, epic-scale shows are essential for attracting viewers.
Netflix frequently strives to build incredibly detailed and visually stunning fictional worlds in its shows, like with both the animated series Castlevania and the live-action The Witcher. While One Piece might have the richest backstory of any Netflix series, due to its extensive manga source material, it’s just one of many fantasy shows on the platform with equally expansive and immersive worlds.
As a huge TV fan, it’s always fascinating to see how shows evolve. Take Stranger Things, for example. When it first came out in 2016, it felt like a neat, self-contained story about some kids in Indiana investigating weird happenings – and a mom desperately searching for her son. Honestly, I never expected it to blow up the way it did! It eventually turned into this massive franchise, and Season 4 was reportedly the most expensive and ambitious season of television ever. I think, sadly, it might have gotten a little lost along the way, trying to do too much.
Stranger Things Season 5’s Gigantic Reported Budget Massively Increased Its Scale
As Stranger Things went on, the show’s storylines became bigger and more complex. The first season focused on a single monster, the Demogorgon, which Eleven barely managed to defeat. By season two, the threats had multiplied – there were now a dozen smaller monsters called Demo-dogs, and a new, more powerful villain, the Mind Flayer, emerged. The show also added several new characters, including Billy, Murray, and Max, to the cast.
Season 3 of Stranger Things, released in 2019, dramatically expanded the show’s world, shifting from a realistic feel to something more over-the-top and cartoonish. It featured hidden Soviet scientists under the Starcourt Mall, a giant monster attacking the town, and a newspaper staff dissolved by Billy’s powers. While this season was visually vibrant, it represented a change in genre. Season 4 smartly dialed back the silliness, opting for a more serious and darker storyline.
Despite its strengths, season 4 of Stranger Things continued the show’s trend of expanding its story across multiple locations. The season followed Hopper in Russia, Eleven and Will adjusting to life in California, and the original group dealing with trouble in Hawkins. By the time all these separate storylines converged, the season had already ended, leaving a sense that the large scope continued to be a factor.
Stranger Things Season 5’s Scope Shift Turned Out To Be A Mistake
As Stranger Things approached its conclusion, season 5 naturally had to escalate the story. With a large cast of over a dozen main characters and many more supporting roles already established, the show surprisingly introduced new faces like Derek and Holly Wheeler. Soon, Stranger Things was exceeding even the ambitious scope of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse storylines.
The fifth season of Stranger Things cost a staggering $400 million to produce, but a large budget couldn’t fix a story that had become overly ambitious. By the middle of the season, it was clear the show had lost its original charm, feeling more like a generic, big-budget fantasy or sci-fi movie filled with predictable jokes, polished effects, and a surprising lack of tension.
To attract the widest possible audience, Stranger Things started avoiding the risk of killing off important characters. This cautious approach has hurt many popular shows in the past, but it was a major issue for Stranger Things Season 5 because the show already had a large cast. The season finale, which aimed to be shocking, ended with all the main characters – Mike, Will, Lucas, Dustin, and Max – still alive. Even older characters like Hopper, Joyce, Steve, Robin, Nancy, and Jonathan made it to the end of the series.
Stranger Things Season 5 Proves Bigger Isn’t Always Better
The uncertain outcome for Eleven was a touching moment, and the ending showed that Stranger Things didn’t shy away from complexity, avoiding an overly sweet conclusion. However, looking at Netflix’s Cobra Kai suggests the show could have been even stronger and more cost-effective with a few clever adjustments. Both Stranger Things and Cobra Kai originally began airing in the late 2010s.
Similar to Stranger Things, the show balanced storylines between teenage and adult characters. Like Stranger Things as well, Cobra Kai celebrated 1980s pop culture while also cleverly challenging and twisting common themes from that time. However, Cobra Kai remained focused on its core characters and their original conflicts, resisting the urge to constantly expand the scope of the show just because it was popular. It didn’t add more storylines, characters, or action simply for the sake of being bigger.
Although Cobra Kai didn’t reach the same level of popularity as Stranger Things, it also avoided the negative reactions that greeted the Stranger Things finale. Ultimately, Stranger Things didn’t require a huge $400 million budget to finish its story, but choosing to accept that money and play it safe with the plot meant losing the mature, realistic tone that originally made the show so captivating.
