Apple TV+’s Wheel of Time Replacement Finally Gets Production Update From Creator

Apple TV’s highly anticipated fantasy series is moving forward with positive news. Earlier this year, the studio announced plans for both a TV show and a movie based on Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series, and now they’re adding Stormlight Archive to the mix.

Sanderson gave fans an update on his live-action projects, saying that the Mistborn adaptation is currently the main focus. However, they plan to move directly into filming a pilot episode for The Stormlight Archive after that.

After I finish the Mistborn screenplay, I plan to develop a pilot for the Stormlight Archive and then work on outlining the entire first season. I won’t be writing everything myself, so it won’t take as long as if I did. I’ll be collaborating with other writers, but I do want to write a significant portion of it personally.

Sanderson praised Apple’s approach to content, noting they focus on quality over quantity. He explained, “Apple doesn’t make as much content as some other studios, but what they do make is consistently excellent and clearly guided by the creators involved.”

The Stormlight Archive Is the Next Big Fantasy Show

The first book in the series, The Way of Kings, takes place on Roshar, a world defined by powerful storms and rocky landscapes. These storms are so frequent and intense that they’ve dramatically influenced both the environment and the way people live. Plants and animals have adapted to survive – creatures retreat into shells, trees draw their branches in, and even grass hides away. As a result, cities are only built in areas that offer natural protection from the weather.

Centuries have passed since the powerful Knights Radiant fell, but their magical weapons and armor – called Shardblades and Shardplate – still exist. These items can turn ordinary people into incredibly strong warriors. Kingdoms are bought and sold for Shardblades, and wars are fought – and won – because of them.

A brutal war is tearing apart the Shattered Plains. Kaladin, once a promising medical apprentice, is now a slave, fighting in a senseless conflict. Ten armies are battling the same enemy, but acting independently, and Kaladin desperately tries to protect his fellow soldiers while questioning the motives of their leaders, who seem to view them as disposable.

The Cosmere Is a Massive Fantasy Setting

, they are also separate, taking place on different worlds.

Brandon Sanderson explains on his website that his Cosmere books are all part of a larger universe with a shared creation story and a consistent set of rules for how magic works. These rules are complex, but they connect the magic systems across all the different worlds. Because these worlds are linked, characters sometimes appear in multiple series. You don’t need to understand these connections to enjoy any single book, but observant readers will occasionally spot these ‘Worldhoppers’ and enjoy a deeper understanding of the overall story.

I’ve been following the fantasy adaptations lately, and honestly, it’s making me a little anxious. It feels like shows like Rings of Power and Wheel of Time haven’t quite hit the mark, and Shadow and Bone was sadly cancelled after just two seasons despite a great start. It seems like streaming services are still trying to figure out how to do epic fantasy well.

The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn are both in early development at Apple.
