Netflix’s Next Book Adaptation Is Facing A Big Challenge That HBO’s Harry Potter Will Avoid

Looking ahead to 2026, several classic novels are being adapted for television, and Netflix is planning a new series based on Little House on the Prairie, set in the 1800s. However, this adaptation may have a harder time gaining acceptance than HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.

The ages of characters in the original Little House on the Prairie stories aren’t always clear. Meanwhile, the popular show Stranger Things ran into a different issue. Because it took almost ten years to create five seasons, the actors—like Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard—were noticeably older than their characters by the final season.

As a longtime fan of Little House on the Prairie, I’m excited about the reboot, and thankfully, there’s so much wonderful material from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books to draw from. However, I’m a little worried about the future of the show. The actors cast for the first season seem quite young, and it’s hard to picture them realistically growing into the characters as the books progress. It’s a unique problem – usually, people worry about actors being too old, but in this case, they might simply look too young to convincingly portray the later stages of the Ingalls family’s journey.

How Harry Potter Is Avoiding Book Adaptation Issue With Its Young Actors

HBO’s new show based on J.K. Rowling’s books is following a similar path to the popular Harry Potter movies. The young actors playing the main characters will age along with their roles, mirroring the books’ progression. Since each book covers one year in Harry’s life, the show’s planned seven seasons, each based on a single book, should maintain a clear and consistent timeline.

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’m really hoping the HBO show’s release schedule will give it a bit more breathing room than some other adaptations, like Little House on the Prairie. One of the things I loved about the movies was watching Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint actually grow up with Harry, Ron, and Hermione – it felt like we were all experiencing it together, without big leaps in time. I’m really hoping the show can capture that same feeling, as long as everything goes smoothly with production.

An HBO executive has indicated that the Harry Potter series won’t release new seasons every year. This means the young actors who begin filming around the same age as their characters will likely be older than those characters by the time the final book, The Deathly Hallows, is adapted for the screen.

Other HBO series haven’t handled this well, which has hurt them. For example, even though His Dark Materials was a great adaptation of Philip Pullman’s books, it took so long to film that the actors Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson were noticeably older by the final season. The Last of Us avoided this problem by casting Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Ramsey looked young enough to convincingly play Ellie at both 14 years old in the first season and as the character matured in the second.

As a big fan, I’m really glad the new show isn’t doing big time jumps like some other adaptations. It’s great because the characters won’t suddenly appear much older or younger – you won’t get that jarring feeling you sometimes see in shows like Stranger Things or worry about it happening with something like Little House on the Prairie. It stays true to the books by only covering a few months at a time, which makes it much easier to follow and believe!

Why Changes To Little House On The Prairie’s Source Material Are Likely

The casting for the first installment of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical series, Little House on the Prairie, appears to be a strong fit. While the actors don’t perfectly match the book’s descriptions, the trailer suggests the Ingalls family will feel like a cohesive and believable unit. Alice Halsey, known for her role in Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry, plays young Laura, with Skywalker Hughes as her sister, Mary.

Luke Bracey embodies the spirit of Charles Ingalls in ScreenRant’s new summer TV show, and thankfully, he’s young enough to continue in the role as the series progresses. The same goes for Crosby Fitzgerald, who plays Caroline Ingalls. While these young actors are perfectly cast as the Ingalls family in the early parts of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie story, the books cover a long period of time. This means the show will likely have to deviate from the source material or ask viewers to accept some unrealistic aging if it continues beyond the first few books.

The original Little House TV series wasn’t afraid to deviate from the books, and the new Netflix adaptation might do the same. A challenge lies in adapting some of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s strongest novels – The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie, and These Happy Golden Years – which cover a longer period of time. The actress playing Laura will need to convincingly portray a much older character for those later stories than the actress cast as Alice Halsey appears to be.

The show will likely adjust Laura’s and Almanzo’s ages – if Almanzo appears – to better fit the storyline. This might mean portraying Laura as older than she is in the book when certain events happen on screen.

Netflix has successfully adapted classic stories before, which is encouraging for a potential Little House on the Prairie series, even if changes are made. For example, Anne with an E, starring Amybeth McNulty, was a well-received adaptation of Anne of Green Gables despite some differences from the original books. Because Little House on the Prairie shares many similarities with Anne of Green Gables, the strategies that worked for Anne with an E could also work well for Little House.

Good news for fans! Netflix has ordered a second season of Little House on the Prairie and has already cast a key character from the original books. Despite some hurdles, the show looks promising, and the first episodes will be available starting July 9th.
