Many popular fantasy series are widely recognized, even by people who don’t usually watch the genre. While it’s great to revisit shows like Game of Thrones or The Witcher, there are some truly excellent, but forgotten, fantasy series that are perfect for a weekend binge.
As a huge fantasy fan, I’ve noticed so many promising shows just… disappear. Whether they were up against massive hits, launched during a crowded season, or just got canceled before their time, it’s easy for them to get lost in the shuffle. Let’s be real, our brains can only hold so much! That one season wonder quickly fades when you’re trying to remember what’s on your grocery list. But just because we’ve forgotten them doesn’t mean they weren’t amazing while they lasted. Some of those shows really were fantastic, even if they didn’t get the recognition they deserved.
Join the Order of The Warrior Nun
Many fantasy shows focus on magic users, mythical beings, or stories based on the past. If you’re looking for something different, the 2000 series Warrior Nun might be for you. Created by Simon Barry, the show is based on the comic book Warrior Nun Areala by Ben Dunn.
Despite being canceled by Netflix after two seasons, Warrior Nun remains popular with critics, holding an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show stars Alba Baptista as Ana Silva, alongside Toya Turner, Lorena Andrea, and Kristina Tonteri-Young as Sisters Mary, Lilith, and Beatrice, who are all dedicated to a sacred mission.
The story centers on Ana, a teenager who unexpectedly finds a sacred object embedded in her back while she’s seemingly lifeless. This discovery revives her and thrusts her into an age-old organization dedicated to defending Earth from demons – all while those same demons are actively pursuing her. It’s a similar premise to Buffy’s role in protecting the town of Sunnydale.
Visit the Story of Merlin, But Not That Merlin
I’m a huge fan of the Merlin show everyone talks about from 2008, and it totally deserves the praise! But you know what? There was another Merlin series, from 1998, that was just as magical. It told the story of Merlin before he met King Arthur, and it’s a shame more people don’t remember it!
This miniseries boasts a star-studded cast, led by Sam Neill as the iconic sorcerer Merlin. The magic is further enhanced by performances from Miranda Richardson, Isabella Rossellini, Martin Short, Helena Bonham Carter, James Earl Jones, and Lena Headey.
The movie received a high 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes because screenwriters Edward Khmara, David Stevens, and Peter Barnes skillfully adapted the classic story of Merlin and King Arthur, adding a fresh and engaging perspective that resonated with audiences.
Atlantis Dives Deep Into Greek Mythology
Created by Johnny Capps, Julian Murphy, and Howard Overman, Atlantis quickly became the BBC’s most successful new Saturday night show in over a decade, since 2006.
Jack Donnelly stars as Jason in a series where his search for his missing father takes a dramatic turn when his submarine malfunctions, leaving him washed ashore in Atlantis. While evading capture, Jason finds unexpected allies in Hercules (Mark Addy) and Pythagoras (Robert Emms), who help him hide. Together, the three embark on a thrilling journey, constantly crossing paths with figures from Greek mythology.
The show Atlantis might not have gotten much attention because it aired around the same time as Merlin, but it’s a really enjoyable blend of Greek myths. Despite a somewhat low 62% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Atlantis looks great and offers a fresh, fun take on classic Greek stories.
The Magic Mirror Will Take You to The 10th Kingdom
The 2000 fantasy miniseries The 10th Kingdom revisits the classic tale of a magical mirror impacting a young woman’s destiny. However, the story and characters offer a fresh take on familiar elements.
I was completely drawn in by the story of Virginia and her dad, Tony. They’re played by Kimberly Williams and John Larroquette, and the setup is just brilliant – they accidentally go through a magical mirror and suddenly find themselves in a world where all those classic fairy tales are actually real. It’s such a clever way to kick off the adventure!
With a near-perfect 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, writer Simon Moore has a lot to be happy about. And fans will be thrilled to see Dianne Wiest playing the Evil Queen!
Get Trapped in the World of The Gryphon
With so many new shows appearing on streaming services, it’s easy to forget about older ones. The Gryphon is one such series, created by Sebastian Marka and Erol Yesilkaya. It’s based on the 1989 German fantasy novel Der Greif by Heike and Wolfgang Hohlbein.
Jeremias Meyer plays Mark, who learns his family history is more complex than he thought. When he tries to rescue his brother, Thomas (played by Thea Tebbs), from a dangerous place called the Black Tower within the world of The Gryphon, Mark uncovers a hidden and troubling family secret.
Despite only lasting one season in 2023, The Gryphon received positive attention for its commitment to practical effects over computer-generated imagery. This dedication to a classic, hands-on approach created a beloved old-school fantasy atmosphere and resulted in a strong 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Go Back in Time With Britannia
The 2018 historical fantasy drama Britannia vividly transported viewers back to 43 AD, putting them right in the middle of the Roman invasion of Britain. The show blended historical accuracy with fantastical elements – like magic and ancient rituals – while portraying the conflicts between warring tribes and the conquering Roman empire.
Mackenzie Crooke’s Britannia tells the story of Aulus Plautius, a Roman General who aimed to conquer Britain after Julius Caesar couldn’t. Though the novel features real historical figures like Caesar and Plautius, and locations like Britain and Rome, it prioritizes storytelling over strict historical accuracy.
The show’s dark comedy, action-packed fights, and beautiful animation were big draws for viewers. However, despite a very positive 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it was canceled after three seasons, leaving fans concerned about what would happen to the characters they loved.
