The latest season of NCIS: Sydney is changing how viewers see its main character, Michelle Mackey (played by Olivia Swann). Season 3, particularly in the episode “The Collective,” starts revealing details about Mackey’s past through flashbacks. This season of the NCIS spin-off focuses more on character development, giving fans a deeper look into the stories of Mackey and Bluebird “Blue” Gleeson (Mavournee Hazel).
For the 2025-2026 TV season, NCIS: Sydney will air with the original NCIS and the new NCIS: Origins. CBS is grouping all of its NCIS shows together, scheduling them back-to-back for three hours every Tuesday night. However, there are some important changes coming to the NCIS franchise, including plans for NCIS: Sydney.
Michelle Mackey’s Story Finally Improves In NCIS: Sydney Season 3
Season 3 of NCIS: Sydney continues to flesh out the personal history of lead character Mackey, starting with details revealed in Episode 15, “The Collective,” and focusing on his emotional journey. The team investigates the death of a Marine with connections to Mackey’s time serving as a Marine Captain in Afghanistan.
The show reveals Mackey’s backstory in flashbacks, detailing her time in the Marines. We see her bravely rescuing fellow soldiers in Pakistan, but also the events leading to her court-martial and how those events linked her to NCIS Special Agent DeShawn Jackson (Sean Sagar).
The latest installment focuses on the main events surrounding the team leader and provides background on Swann’s character. It also delves into Mackey’s current investigation into the death of a Marine she previously saved, revealing more about why Michelle was targeted by The Ghost.
Viewers often find Swann’s character, as the main lead in NCIS: Sydney, to be lacking emotional depth. However, recent episodes have started to build a more complex and sympathetic character by exploring his past alongside current storylines. Introducing connections to figures like Lee Meyer (who poses a threat to Michelle’s son) and his son, Trey Mackey, helps to make Swann more relatable and sets the stage for further character development.
Mackey’s Changes May Come Too Late To Save NCIS: Sydney
The recent changes to NCIS: Sydney give Swann’s character more depth and emotional resonance, which is a good response to previous criticisms of the team leader. “The Collective” episode could be a key moment for the show, possibly changing viewers’ minds by focusing on Mackey’s emotional journey and revealing the reasons to invest in her story.
Despite a change in its broadcast schedule, NCIS: Sydney is making a smart storytelling choice at just the right time. CBS has confirmed it still believes in the show, but is moving it from Tuesdays this fall to create space for another NCIS series.
CBS revealed a new show on April 15th featuring LL Cool J reprising his role as Sam Hanna from NCIS: Los Angeles, alongside Scott Caan, known for playing detective Danny “Danno” Williams in Hawaii Five-0. To make room for the fall debut of NCIS: New York, CBS has moved NCIS: Sydney to the mid-season schedule for the 2026-2027 television season.
The first two seasons of NCIS: Sydney each had less than ten episodes, but the third season grew to 20. It’s also moving to a fall premiere in 2025. However, a shift to midseason broadcasts suggests fewer episodes overall, and may indicate the show has already reached its peak popularity, possibly meaning character development for Mackey happened too late to significantly impact the series.
