has officially ordered its reboot of The Rockford Files to series. The show will cast .
Okay, so heading into NBC’s presentation on Monday – where they’re really leaning into a Rockford Files revival – it’s been confirmed they’re moving forward with a bunch of new shows. I’m hearing they’ve greenlit three pilots they shot this season, signaling a return to more traditional pilot production. We’re talking about Line of Fire, a drama that looks like a twisty family conspiracy within law enforcement, and two comedies: Sunset P.I. and Newlyweds. Sounds like NBC is trying to cover a lot of ground here, and I’m curious to see how these all pan out.
NBC commissioned eight pilots this year but decided not to move forward with four others. This means they successfully picked up half of the pilots they ordered.
According to NBCUniversal’s Pearlena Igbokwe, the network’s creative teams – led by Lisa Katz of NBC and Erin Underhill of Universal Television – created an impressive lineup of eight pilot projects. She stated that the quality of these pilots is remarkable, allowing them to take risks and ultimately develop shows with strong potential for success.
What Is The Rockford Files About?
Along with the announcement of a new season, NBC has revealed a description of the updated Rockford Files. The show follows James Rockford (played by Boreanaz), who, after being released from prison for a crime he didn’t commit, returns to work as a private investigator in Los Angeles. He uses his personality and intelligence to solve cases, but his attempts to rebuild his life quickly attract unwanted attention from both the police and criminals.
Emmy winner Joe Mantegna stars in the new version of The Rockford Files, alongside Michaela McManus, Felix Solis, and Jacki Weaver. Mike Daniels writes and executive produces the series, with Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman also serving as executive producers. Chris Leanza is a co-executive producer.
The Rockford Files Returns to Television
Roy Huggins and Stephen J. Cannell created The Rockford Files, a popular television series starring James Garner as Jim Rockford, a private investigator recently released from prison. The show, which also featured Noah Beery Jr., Gretchen Corbett, Joe Santos, and Stuart Margolin, originally aired for six seasons and 123 episodes, concluding in 1980. It received significant recognition, including 18 Emmy nominations and five wins, among them Outstanding Drama Series and an acting award for Garner himself. Garner later reprised his role as Rockford in eight television movies that aired on CBS between 1994 and 1999.
Steve Carell tried to revive The Rockford Files in 2009 by producing a pilot episode with Dermot Mulroney as the lead, but the network didn’t order it as a series. Later, Universal Pictures planned a movie reboot with Vince Vaughn, but that project also stalled and was never made.
The Rockford Files will air on NBC as part of its 2026-2027 broadcast season.
