Mortal Kombat II is a follow-up to the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, which was based on the popular video game series. While the first film received mixed reactions from critics, fans and general moviegoers generally enjoyed it – a surprising outcome, considering the poor reputation of video game adaptations. However, Mortal Kombat II has proven even more successful, earning positive reviews from both critics and audiences.
A key feature of every Mortal Kombat game is the “Fatality” – a finishing move where the winning fighter delivers a gruesome and over-the-top killing blow to their opponent. While this extreme violence has often caused controversy, it’s a big part of what fans love about the series. Fatalities are so iconic that Mortal Kombat wouldn’t be the same without them. This list ranks every major character death, or Fatality, shown in the new movie.
Johnny Cage Unlocks His Arcana & Helps Defeat Sub-Zero
The first Mortal Kombat movie hinted at the arrival of Johnny Cage, a martial arts expert who also happens to be a Hollywood actor. While he isn’t the main focus of Mortal Kombat II, the movie does bring him into the story. He has some really cool and well-choreographed fight scenes, but sadly, he only performs one Fatality, and it’s not the most memorable one.
Johnny Cage and Kano travel to Hell to take a powerful artifact from Sub-Zero. The evil Shao Kahn brought Sub-Zero back to life to guard this amulet, which is the source of Shao Kahn’s strength. Sub-Zero manages to fight off attacks from Scorpion, Kano, and Jade, but he’s caught off guard when Johnny Cage unleashes a special ability and delivers a decisive kick. The kick shatters the amulet and sends Sub-Zero falling into the fires of Hell.
Shao Kahn Impales Jax With the Hilt of His Hammer
Shao Kahn is the primary antagonist in the Mortal Kombat games, and Mortal Kombat II perfectly captures his villainy. Driven by greed, he tries to take over other worlds by winning the Mortal Kombat tournaments. He’s also known for his brutal finishing moves, called Fatalities, though his execution of Jax is considered one of his weaker ones.
Jax teams up with Sonya Blade and other Earthrealm heroes to try and steal and destroy Shao Kahn’s amulet, but they end up face-to-face with the conqueror. When Shao Kahn tries to kill Sonya, Jax jumps in to save her, but it costs him his life. Shao Kahn tears off one of Jax’s metal arms and badly damages the other, leaving him vulnerable. However, the final blow—Shao Kahn simply impaling Jax through the throat with the tip of his hammer—feels underwhelming, almost as if Shao Kahn didn’t consider Jax a worthy opponent for a more elaborate finishing move.
Scorpion Executes Sub-Zero’s Shadow Form
The 2021 film gives a lot of attention to the rivalry between Sub-Zero and Scorpion. In Mortal Kombat II, Sub-Zero is brought back to life by a sorcerer to protect Shao Kahn’s amulet, though this part of the story isn’t a major focus. The video game expands on this, turning the resurrected Sub-Zero, now known as Noob Saibot, into a shadowy wraith. Mortal Kombat II reflects this in the game by letting Sub-Zero create a separate, shadowy clone of himself during fights.
Scorpion and Sub-Zero predictably clash, and Scorpion uses his signature “Get over here!” spear to strike Sub-Zero’s shadowy form. The spear goes right through the shadow, ripping it from Sub-Zero’s body and then slicing it completely in two. While visually striking, the fact that it’s just a shadow and not Sub-Zero himself makes the moment feel less impactful.
Shao Kahn Defeats Katana’s Father, King Jerrod, & Claims Edenia
The film’s first death is that of King Jerrod, killed by Shao Kahn. As the last champion standing, Jerrod was fighting to save the realm of Edenia from Shao Kahn’s rule. However, Shao Kahn defeats him in battle, publicly executing the king in front of witnesses like Jerrod’s wife, Sindel, and daughter, Kitana.
King Jerrod’s death was always going to happen, and though expected, it’s still a sad moment. He fought bravely as the last defender of Edenia, almost defeating Shao Kahn. However, at the very last moment, Shao Kahn turned Jerrod’s own sword against him, impaling both of his hands. Shao Kahn then brutally ripped off Jerrod’s hands, leaving him defenseless as Shao Kahn’s war hammer pierced his stomach. Throughout the film, Shao Kahn frequently uses his hammer to deliver fatal blows.
Sonya Blade Punches a Hole Straight Through Sindel
Sonya Blade was among the first Earthrealm warriors to compete in Mortal Kombat. Her fight is against Sindel, who has a complicated history: she’s Katana’s mother, the widow of King Jerrod, and was once allied with the powerful Shao Kahn. While Sindel has various powers in the games, the movie highlights her incredibly powerful sonic scream, which can stun, push back, and even deafen her enemies. During the fight, Sonya struggles to withstand the force of Sindel’s scream, all while dodging spikes that unexpectedly erupt from the ground.
Sonya defeats Sindel quickly by using her Arcana – energy she focuses around her wrists and arms to deliver powerful attacks. She literally punches through Sindel, and then, to ensure a decisive victory, she allows a spike from the arena to pierce Sindel’s head. It was clear Sonya had won, but she made absolutely sure of it.
Cole Young Defeats Shao Kahn, But Only for a Moment
Cole Young is unexpectedly thrust into the Mortal Kombat tournament and finds himself facing the powerful Shao Kahn. Unbeknownst to Cole, Shao Kahn has just stolen the power of Lord Raiden, using it to fuel an amulet that will grant him immortality and god-like abilities. If Shao Kahn hadn’t achieved this, Cole would have defeated him by fatally wounding him. However, Cole is horrified to watch the injury instantly heal, meaning the battle must go on.
Cole’s death comes as a real surprise. He barely has time to react after realizing his attack didn’t finish off Shao Kahn before being slammed to the ground. Shao Kahn swiftly brings his war hammer down, brutally crushing Cole’s head in a violent burst. He then casually kicks Cole’s body away, showing complete disregard for his life. While not the most graphic death in the film, it’s particularly shocking because Cole was the hero of the 2021 movie.
Liu Kang vs. Kung Lao Delivers the Best Fight in the Entire Movie
Kung Lao’s death in the movie Mortal Kombat was a truly sad moment. As a powerful defender of Earthrealm and Liu Kang’s close brother, he was meant to fight alongside Liu Kang against Shao Kahn. However, Shao Kahn brought him back to life and forced him to fight for him, putting him against his own allies and brother. The battle between Liu Kang and Kung Lao is considered by many to be the film’s best, a heartbreaking fight where both brothers desperately want the other to choose their side.
The battle rages on. Liu Kang carefully uses fire attacks to stay in control, while Kung Lao’s signature Razor-Rimmed Hat whirls dangerously around the arena, posing a threat to both of them. Finally, Liu Kang slams the hat into the ground, but Kung Lao keeps it spinning at incredible speed, transforming it into a whirling, saw-like weapon.
Okay, so this fight scene… it’s brutal. Liu Kang acts like he doesn’t even see Kung Lao coming, letting his brother initiate the attack, clearly intending to use the spinning blade against Liu Kang himself. But Liu Kang is faster. He shockingly grabs Kung Lao, yanks him back, and forces him onto that very blade – essentially killing him with his own weapon. It’s a devastating moment, and Liu Kang’s promise to somehow save Kung Lao later just underscores the sheer emotional weight of two brothers fighting to the death. It really hit me hard.
Katana Finally Defeats Shao Kahn & Liberates Her Home Realm of Edenia
A conflict is bound to happen between Katana and Shao Kahn, the man who killed her father, King Jerrod, and then raised her as his own. Katana initially fights for Outworld, but during the climactic battle, she betrays Shao Kahn and sides with Earthrealm. This isn’t unexpected, considering Katana feels no affection or allegiance to the man who murdered her father and conquered her homeland, Edenia.
For years, Katana has been a secret agent, working with Lord Raiden while posing as loyal to Shao Kahn. She’s been feeding vital intelligence to Earthrealm from within Shao Kahn’s palace. Shao Kahn keeps Katana obedient by controlling and abusing her mother, Sindel, even threatening her life to ensure Katana’s continued loyalty. During the battle, Johnny Cage destroys the amulet that grants Shao Kahn immortality, finally allowing Katana the chance to defeat him.
Following a fierce battle where Katana skillfully used her Steel Fans, she gained the advantage over her father. Before delivering the final blow, she removed his helmet, revealing his face to the onlookers. She declared it was time everyone saw him as a mortal man, then swiftly impaled him with her fans, one on each side of his head. Inside his skull, she opened the fans, slicing cleanly through his head and splitting it into three pieces.
