Michael C. Hall is famous for his role as the serial killer Dexter Morgan, but he surprised audiences after the show ended with a variety of different projects. He appeared in biographical films, returned to the stage in Broadway productions, and even started a band, showcasing his range as an actor. During this time, he also joined the world of Disney for the first time, voicing the villain Toffee on the animated series Star vs. the Forces of Evil from 2015 to 2018.
Although the series wasn’t as popular as some other Disney animated shows, it did build a loyal fanbase. Viewers and critics alike enjoyed the show’s humor and the rich story it told. While Toffee was considered a strong villain, many haven’t talked about the actor who played him, Hall, and the performance he gave.
Star vs. the Forces of Evil’s Toffee Is an Underrated Disney Villain
I absolutely loved Star vs. the Forces of Evil! It followed Star Butterfly, who’s this amazing magical princess from another dimension. Basically, her parents, the King and Queen of Mewni, sent her to Earth as an exchange student. They wanted her to learn and grow so she’d be ready to eventually take over as queen. It was such a fun story to follow her journey!
Throughout the first two seasons, Star and her friend, Marco—who eventually becomes her boyfriend—work together to manage the wildness of Star’s magic. They journey to strange and magical dimensions while also defending against Ludo, a small monster from Mewni, who is determined to steal her wand for his nefarious plans.
Around the middle of the first season, Ludo realizes he needs help with his schemes and managing his clumsy monster army. This is how he teams up with Toffee.
Toffee, a lizard-like monster from Mewni, always presented himself as calm and professional with his suit and tie. However, he had secret ties to the royal Butterfly family and was working with Ludo for his own hidden purposes. It was obvious he would eventually betray Ludo and reveal what he was really after.
Fans were immediately captivated by the character’s surprising origins and motivations, revealed early in the series. However, that initial excitement didn’t last long. Toffee’s return was brief – he was permanently defeated in Season 3, Episode 7.
Toffee was a popular character because of his mysterious nature, and people were fascinated by his goals, which mirrored those of another character. Fans spent a lot of time discussing his true intentions online, sharing theories and hoping to see him return to the show.
Sadly, Toffee never made a full return after a brief appearance in Season 4. This was a big letdown, especially because Michael C. Hall’s voice acting was such a strong part of what made the character great.
Michael C. Hall’s Performance as Toffee Is One of His Best
Though Hall is known for playing many admirable and kind characters, he truly shines when portraying villains and complex anti-heroes. His performance as Toffee demonstrates this perfectly – he brought a chillingly calm and calculating quality to the character’s voice.
He offered a welcome change from the sillier characters like Ludo and many of the show’s villains. This made him seem like a genuinely dangerous and serious threat, unlike the others.
Even dedicated fans of Star vs. the Forces of Evil agree the show wasn’t as good in the later parts of Season 3 and throughout Season 4. A lot of people believe the early and permanent removal of a particularly complex character – one with interesting and understandable reasons for their actions – was a major reason for this decline.
It’s been fantastic revisiting Dexter Morgan, but honestly, it’s even more exciting to see Michael C. Hall bring that same captivating darkness to completely different roles. He’s just so good at playing those subtly threatening characters, and it’s a real treat to see him explore that talent in unexpected ways.
