Sony’s Helldivers Adaptation is the Perfect Successor to Starship Troopers

Starship Troopers is a prime example – a series that uses a war against alien bugs to make pointed political commentary. Now, Helldivers, which is planned to be adapted into a movie, appears poised to be a worthy successor.

At CinemaCon, director Justin Lin announced that a movie based on the popular video game Helldivers is in the works. He’s already collaborated with the game’s creators to ensure the film stays true to the source material. Starring Jason Momoa, the movie looks promising, drawing inspiration from Starship Troopers to create a compelling and fitting successor.

Starship Troopers Left Behind an Amazing Legacy

Originally a 1959 novel by Robert A. Heinlein, Starship Troopers envisions a future war between humanity and an alien bug race. The film adaptation, released in 1997, greatly expands on the book’s political satire, creating a surprisingly funny and visually impressive movie with special effects that still look good today.

The original Starship Troopers movie was strong enough to be enjoyed on its own, and its themes still resonate today. As with many popular films, it spawned sequels – two in total since 1997 – though their quality and how closely they followed the original story varied. The same is true for the two animated projects; while different, they still explored the core ideas of the first film, namely, fighting bugs.

The Starship Troopers franchise truly found success with video games. From 1979 to 2026, twelve different games allowed players to fight the bugs of Klendathu, and it’s likely more games will be released in the future.

Helldivers Isn’t So Different From Starship Troopers

Originally designed as a strategy game viewed from above, the game has transformed into a third-person shooter that realistically portrays the intense and violent nature of war. The story centers around Super Earth, a planet secretly controlled by a harsh government that promotes extreme patriotism and encourages citizens to sacrifice themselves as Helldivers.

Helldivers are elite soldiers deployed from space into enemy territory to fight groups like robots and giant insects. However, it’s often unclear who the ‘good guys’ really are in this ongoing conflict. The game shares a lot of similarities with the movie Starship Troopers, both in how it looks and the story it tells.

They tried to shift the blame onto a computer bug for the error that caused an asteroid to hit Earth, resulting in many deaths. This mistake also sparked a needless war with a peaceful species and rallied public support for joining the conflict.

What really sets Helldivers II apart, and makes it so engaging, is how dangerous combat is. While Starship Troopers shows brutal fights but allows moments for characters to recover, Helldivers II keeps the pressure on constantly – stopping even for a second can be fatal.

A Helldivers Movie is a Great Follow-up to What Starship Troopers Started

As a lifelong movie fan, I never considered Starship Troopers truly gone, but it definitely hasn’t had the spotlight it deserves since the ’90s. That’s why I think Helldivers is a perfect successor – and for a lot of reasons. The original film’s brilliant political satire is a huge part of what made it work, and Helldivers taps into that same darkly funny vein. Just like joining the Mobile Infantry was presented as an honor, being a Helldiver feels special, and fighting for Super Earth feels like the ultimate act of patriotism.

A Helldivers movie could be fantastic and still pay tribute to what made Starship Troopers great without feeling unnecessary. While both involve fighting massive bugs, the constant, intense combat is the key similarity. Starship Troopers couldn’t fully showcase a large-scale, prolonged war due to budget limitations, but a Helldivers film could easily achieve that, offering a much more expansive and relentless battle experience.

As a film fan, I think some ideas really stick with you, and Helldivers has one of those. It’s tackling themes of government overreach, which feels especially relevant today, but what’s brilliant is it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s still a movie about blasting bugs and robots, after all! It reminds me a lot of Starship Troopers – it can explore these deeper, even a little dark, ideas without becoming overly depressing. It’s a smart balance, and I think that’s what makes it so promising.

Fans are really excited about the upcoming movie Helldivers, especially since movies based on video games are currently doing well – films like Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario have been huge successes. Helldivers has the potential to be a thrilling and funny action movie with impressive visuals, all while telling a relatable human story. If it succeeds, it could build on the legacy of Starship Troopers and even introduce a new audience to the Helldivers games.
