Both Matthew Rhys and Rosamund Pike are known for their impressive work in film and television, with a history of earning critical praise. They’ve both appeared in many thrillers – Rhys has a strong track record, and Pike starred in the popular film Gone Girl. It’s no surprise, then, that their new psychological thriller, Hallow Road, is proving popular with viewers.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie Hallow Road is currently the seventh most popular title on Hulu in the US. It’s also performing well on Paramount+ in Canada and is available for purchase on the Apple TV Store in Costa Rica. Hallow Road is a psychological horror film from 2025, directed by Babak Anvari, who is also directing a new Cloverfield movie.
What Is Hallow Road About?
I just finished watching Hallow Road, and it really got under my skin. It centers around Maddie and Frank, played by really convincing actors, and their daughter Alice. The story kicks off when they get a frantic call from Alice in the middle of the night – she’s been in an accident. Maddie, being a paramedic, tries to walk her through giving CPR over the phone, but things quickly spiral out of control. It’s a tense watch, let me tell you!
Maddie and Frank are racing to help Alice after her accident, but someone else arrives on the scene first. They overhear a conversation happening over the phone with Alice, and the situation quickly escalates. The movie largely unfolds as Maddie and Frank drive towards Alice, communicating with her along the way.
The film’s intense atmosphere draws viewers into the parents’ frantic efforts to save their daughter, and the events happening on the other end of the phone call build tension. However, despite a strong setting and capable actors, Hallow Road received mixed reactions from both critics and audiences.
Hallow Road Was a Hit with Critics
Critics generally liked the movie Hallow Road, giving it an 88% rating. Kevin Maher of The Times (UK) praised the film for its deep understanding of family relationships and the sacrifices parents make for their children.
Peter Travers of The Travers Take rated the film 3 out of 4 stars, noting that while a movie centered around two people talking in a car might not sound thrilling, it becomes captivating thanks to the performances of Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys, a suspenseful script, and the skillful direction of Babak Anvari.
However, viewers didn’t respond to Hallow Road as well as critics. It received a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ audience rating and a 6.0/10 rating on IMDb, based on over 11,000 reviews. Despite the mixed reception, many agreed that Matthew Rhys and Rosamund Pike delivered outstanding performances.
While Hallow Road isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, it’s definitely worth checking out. Stellar performances by Matthew Rhys and Rosamund Pike, combined with a gripping and unpredictable plot, explain why it’s become so popular on Hulu.
