Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 7. The latest season of Daredevil has reintroduced a character from the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they’ve been significantly enhanced. This Disney+ show is focused on bringing back familiar faces. Daredevil: Born Again is the first series dedicated to a character who first appeared in the Netflix Marvel shows (The Defenders Saga), and it won’t be the last – The Punisher will get his own series, “The Punisher: One Last Kill”, in May.
The plan originally called for bringing back only Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin. However, after some changes, the Marvel series officially incorporated the original Netflix Daredevil storyline and characters into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. This allowed actors like Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, and Wilson Bethel as Bullseye, along with characters like Vanessa Fisk, to reprise their roles. Season 2 continues this trend.
As a huge fan of the old Marvel Netflix shows, I’m really excited about the new Daredevil: Born Again season. It’s not just continuing Daredevil’s story, but bringing back characters we loved! They’re dedicating a whole episode to revisiting the original Jessica Jones show and how it all connects to what’s happening now in the MCU with these characters. And get this – set photos suggest we’ll be seeing Luke Cage and Iron Fist show up eventually, which is amazing since they were in season 3 of the original Daredevil! It feels like they’re really building on that old continuity, and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.
Before the season continued, a popular character from the original Daredevil series, Brett Mahoney, played by Royce Johnson, unexpectedly joined the cast of Daredevil: Born Again. Fans had been hoping for Mahoney’s return since the new series was announced, and in season 2, episode 7, Marvel Studios delivered – and even gave the character a more significant role.
Brett Mahoney Gets A Major Upgrade In His MCU Return
In the Netflix series Daredevil, Officer Mahoney was a New York City police officer who frequently assisted Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson with their cases. When the character reappeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was revealed he’d been promoted. Mahoney told Karen Page that he was now Chief of Detectives, which allowed him to arrange her transfer to the 15th Precinct instead of a more isolated location.
Mahoney’s promotion feels earned. It’s been a while since audiences last saw the character – Daredevil season 3 aired in 2018, and his last appearances in the Netflix Defenders saga were in The Punisher season 2 (released January 18, 2019). Given his established honesty and skill as a police officer, it’s logical he’d advance to a higher rank. Just as Daredevil: Born Again showed Matt Murdock thriving professionally, Mahoney seems to be doing well in his career.
Brett’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was well-timed, as he assisted Karen when she needed help and facilitated a meeting between her and Daredevil before Matt began his preparations. Given the unchecked power of Mayor Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force, Mahoney’s reappearance in Daredevil: Born Again provides a much-needed balance. He has the potential to be a valuable ally for Daredevil as they head into the season finale.
Mahoney Needs To Stay In Daredevil: Born Again Moving Forward
Even if he doesn’t show up in the last episode of the current season, Wilson Fisk’s lawyer, Mahoney, is a character the show should keep around for season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again and beyond. Since Foggy Nelson, who was central to the original series, is no longer present, having familiar faces like Mahoney is a plus. Plus, now that Mahoney is the Chief of Detectives, he could be a valuable ally in helping Daredevil protect New York City once Fisk is defeated.
For the past two seasons, the Anti-Vigilante Task Force has been a source of fear in the city. With Mayor Fisk likely to lose in the season finale, making Officer Mahoney the prominent police figure in season 3 would be a great way to shift the show’s direction and portray a safer New York City. However, Marvel has not yet confirmed whether Mahoney will be in season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again.
