continues to crush the streaming competition. And the original series isn’t far behind it.
According to FlixPatrol, Malcolm in the Middle is currently a top ten hit on Disney+ in more than twelve countries. It’s ranked as high as number five in places like France, Belize, Mexico, and Haiti, and is in the top ten in the United States. This success isn’t surprising, given the show’s long-standing popularity and the recent release of its revival, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair.
The Legacy and Impact of Malcolm in the Middle
Linwood Boomer, one of the show’s creators, brought Malcolm in the Middle to Fox on January 9, 2000. The series starred Frankie Muniz as Malcolm, a relatable kid navigating life as the middle child in a quirky but loving family. Jane Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston played his parents, Lois and Hal, and the show also featured Christopher Kennedy Masterson as the oldest son Francis, Justin Berfield as Reese, and Erik Per Sullivan as the youngest, Dewey.
When Malcolm in the Middle first aired, it was a hit with both critics and viewers, receiving excellent reviews and attracting a large audience. Throughout its seven seasons, the show created 151 episodes and earned over two dozen awards, along with numerous nominations from industry organizations.
The new series, which fans had been eagerly waiting for, premiered on Disney+ on April 10th. The four-episode show reunited many of the original actors from Malcolm in the Middle and also introduced fresh faces, including Keeley Karsten as Malcolm’s daughter, Leah. Like her father in the original series, Leah frequently addresses the audience directly, breaking the fourth wall.
What the Future Looks Like for Malcolm in the Middle
Despite the recent Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair being a hit with fans, a continuation of the show isn’t likely. It was intended as a single event, and the actors who starred in the original series are all very busy with other projects.
Boomer said it would take a very specific set of circumstances for that to occur. He doubts he’ll still be around if it takes another 17 years, but hopes one of his children might make it happen.
You can now watch both Malcolm in the Middle and its follow-up, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, on Disney+.
