Netflix’s latest action thriller is quickly becoming popular worldwide, drawing comparisons to shows like Jack Ryan and Reacher. Both Jack Ryan and Reacher – both Prime Video hits – feature compelling heroes with military experience who work to defeat villains. Actors John Krasinski and Alan Ritchson both bring strong, engaging performances to their roles.
Despite often being compared, Jack Ryan and Jack Reacher are actually quite distinct characters. Ryan relies more on his intelligence and problem-solving skills than physical combat, while Reacher is primarily known for his strength, fighting ability, and tactical expertise. Ryan tends to analyze conflicts like puzzles to be solved, whereas Reacher directly confronts and overcomes obstacles through force.
A key difference between the two characters lies in the kinds of challenges they face. Jack Ryan works to prevent large-scale international plots, carefully taking them apart piece by piece. Meanwhile, Jack Reacher is a wanderer who consistently finds himself personally involved in the crimes he investigates.
Both Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and Reacher deliver exciting action and suspense, but they approach it in distinct ways. Netflix’s new series, Man on Fire, successfully blends the strengths of both shows into a truly captivating experience.
Warning: this article includes spoilers for Man on Fire!
Man On Fire Has A Storyline Like Jack Ryan & A Hero Like Reacher
I just finished watching Netflix’s Man on Fire, and while it shares a name with the fantastic Denzel Washington film, it’s not a straight-up remake. It’s actually based on the same book series by A.J. Quinnell, but they’ve taken the story in a fresh direction. It feels connected to the original, but definitely stands on its own.
This story blends the action of the Reacher TV show with the intricate conspiracies seen in Jack Ryan. Like Reacher, the main character, John Creasy, is personally involved in the case. However, the plot quickly expands into a large-scale conspiracy with international connections, similar to the Jack Ryan series.
Unlike some other characters, John Creasy shares more traits with Reacher. While Creasy, like Jack Ryan, has a military and intelligence background, both he and Reacher rely more on physical strength and fighting. Both men have also left their former lives behind and ended up taking the law into their own hands.
Creasy resolves conflicts using a combination of careful planning, like Jack Ryan, and ruthless force, similar to Reacher. He meticulously questions people, though his methods are often brutal and unsettling. He’s also a strategic thinker, carefully crafting plans to reach his objectives. In Man on Fire, he essentially orchestrates two distinct and elaborate operations.
He’s incredibly violent, readily using extreme force against those he targets – almost killing Ferraz in one instance. He excels in all kinds of combat, both with guns and in close-quarters fighting, culminating in a spectacular final battle in Man on Fire.
Beyond its thrilling action, Man on Fire offers a unique emotional depth. The series delves into the characters’ experiences with trauma and grief – Creasy battles severe PTSD, while Poe deals with recent, painful experiences. Importantly, the show also highlights the positive impact of human connection, as each character grows and changes through their relationships with others.
Man On Fire Could Be As Successful As Jack Ryan & Reacher
Currently, Man on Fire hasn’t been officially renewed for a second season. However, Steven Caple Jr., one of the show’s executive producers, has stated they are already working on plans for it. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II also expressed interest in continuing his role as John Creasy, telling ScreenRant he could see the show running for multiple seasons.
I’m absolutely thrilled with how quickly Man on Fire blew up on Netflix! It hit number one globally almost immediately, actually topping the charts in 22 countries within just a day of release. And the fans are loving it – it already has a 74% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a great sign! I really hope this means we’ll be getting another season soon.
As a huge fan of shows like Reacher and Jack Ryan, I think Netflix is really onto something with Man on Fire. The main character, John Creasy, immediately grabbed my attention, and the way the first season ended left me wanting more – a definite setup for another season! Honestly, Netflix has a habit of canceling shows that are actually good, and I really hope they don’t do that here. They’ve got all the ingredients for a fantastic, long-running franchise, they just need to stick with it and give Man on Fire the chance it deserves.
