This year, the usual Christmas movies just haven’t felt right, so I’ve been looking for something a little different on streaming services. That’s how I ended up checking out Tubi.
I’ve been hearing a lot about Tubi lately, and it’s quickly become more than just a free streaming option for me. It’s a treasure trove of wonderfully weird movies! I stumbled across the 1959 film Santa Claus – the original Mexican version, now dubbed in English – and it completely blew me away. Seriously, if you haven’t seen the movie where Santa battles a demon, you need to check it out. I was hooked!

What Is Santa Claus (1959) About?
In the movie Santa Claus, Santa is getting ready for his yearly Christmas journey around the globe, but Lucifer is plotting to stop him. He recruits the demon Pitch to turn children against Santa, hoping to spoil Christmas for everyone.
Santa knows Lucifer is trying to ruin Christmas and is taking steps to stop him, including getting help from the wizard Merlin, who lives at the North Pole. The story follows the battle between Santa and Lucifer as they fight over things like a child’s belief in goodness and whether or not the world will celebrate a happy Christmas.

This Movie Is Jammed With Weirdness Even Beyond Santa Battling A Demon
The movie’s concept is already pretty unusual, and it really plays with the traditional image of Santa Claus. Instead of the North Pole, Santa lives in a castle on another planet, and his helpers aren’t elves – they’re kids from all over the world. A significant part of the movie feels a lot like the “It’s a Small World” ride at Disney World, and that sequence happens fairly early on.
Santa doesn’t just have regular reindeer – he also has mechanical ones! Plus, his telescope is surprisingly designed using parts inspired by the human body. It’s also cool that he has Merlin as an advisor, even though this version of Merlin is a bit different from what you might expect.
Even though the premise is strange, the movie is surprisingly captivating and fun. I anticipated it being a bit cheesy, but I quickly became genuinely interested in the story.

Those Who Love The Vintage Christmas Aesthetic Will Love This Movie
Beyond the story itself, what really stood out to me about Santa Claus was its charming, old-fashioned Christmas look. While it was simply meant to be festive at the time, fans of classic Christmas decorations – like vintage ornaments, plastic blow molds, and tinsel-covered trees – will absolutely love the visual style of this movie.

If you love the look and feel of A Christmas Story and don’t mind watching it every year on Christmas, you’ll probably enjoy the visuals of Santa Claus too. And if you’re looking for something different to watch, this movie is worth a try – plus, you can check out the Mystery Science Theater episode based on it. In fact, Know Your Meme says that episode is where the phrase “nightmare fuel” originated!
Plus, it’s completely free to watch on Tubi, along with a bunch of other great content. If you’re looking for something different from the usual Christmas movies this year, this one is worth checking out. And even if you don’t love it, you’ll definitely have a story to tell – it’s one of the most unusual holiday movies in a long time!
You can watch Santa Claus on Tubi right now! If you don’t already have Tubi, we have a helpful guide to get you set up and streaming. I’ll keep looking for the most unusual Christmas movies and TV specials.
