Although there won’t be a sequel to Transformers One, the new Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover series looks like a great alternative. When Transformers One was released, many fans hoped it would offer a more complex and mature story than the franchise had seen in years.
While Michael Bay’s Transformers films have their issues, other Transformers content is usually quite old and geared towards children. Transformers One stood out as a film specifically for dedicated fans, offering complex characters and a more sophisticated storyline.
Even though the movie received high praise – 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and positive reviews from both longtime fans and new viewers – it didn’t do well in theaters, effectively ending any plans for a follow-up. However, with the news of a crossover between G.I. Joe and Transformers, fans of the Transformers franchise might finally have something exciting to look forward to.
Transformers & GI Joe’s Adult Animated Series Sounds Perfect For Transformers One Fans
Skybound Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment revealed plans in October 2025 for Energon Universe, a new animated series for adults. The show will combine characters and storylines from G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Void Rivals. Robert Kirkman, known for creating the Invincible comic and TV series, will lead the project.
This new series will appeal to adult viewers, much like Invincible, Love Death + Robots, and Creature Commandos – a trend that’s been successful in animation lately. Building on the popularity of the Energon Universe comic series, which began in 2023, it’s designed to give fans of Transformers One the continuation they’ve been waiting for.
Similar to Transformers One, the Energon Universe will offer a sophisticated, mature storyline, likely with action and violence, as the worlds of G.I. Joe and Transformers intersect. Given the popularity of Transformers One and Invincible for their engaging, adult-oriented stories that don’t take themselves too seriously, Energon Universe aims to blend these elements perfectly.
An Adult Transformers Animated Show Is A Pleasant Surprise After Transformers One’s Performance
Despite positive reviews and strong audience reactions, Transformers One didn’t perform well financially. While the film received high scores on sites like Rotten Tomatoes and generated a lot of online buzz, it only earned $129 million at the box office, falling short of its $147 million production budget.
It seemed like Transformers: Rise of the Beasts might be the end for the film series, but surprisingly, a new Transformers animated show was announced just a year later. This show appears to be designed for fans of the 2024 movie. It’s refreshing to see a franchise get another opportunity, especially since so many are canceled before they really get started.
